District Flag Heraldry:

In 1971 Ronald C. Rau, AP, commander of District 27, presented to the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, a plaque commemorating the recognition of the efforts put forth by the members of D/27 in the program of Cooperative Charting by naminga spit of land near the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, “Power Squadron Spit.” That plaque was mounted on the lighthouse in a ceremony during 1971.

In July of 2003 the US Coast Guard gave ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service, National Seashore operation. The plaque was removed by the Coast Guard for storage at their facility at Group Fort Macon. The storage location was foundand permission was asked to have it cleaned and restored to its place upon the lighthouse.

The Coast Guard gave permission and the current Superintendent of the National Seashore facility at Harker’s Island granted permission to restore the plaque to its rightful place to commemorate the efforts of D/27 members.

A ceremony is being planned for Saturday, May 15, 2004 to reposition the bronze plaque on the lighthouse

The colors red, white and blue are from the USPS Ensign.

The red and white triangles are the triangles of USPS that represent, self-education, civic service and fraternal boating club.

The roman numerals represent District 27 and can be read from either side.

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse represents Power Squadron Spit.

The gold trim around the edge of the flag represents 50 years.
