Once a decision was made at National, that Districts were allowed to have their own rectangular shaped burgees, D/7 held a contest to determine their burgee in the Fall of 1997. Multiple members from multiple squadrons participated, including me, when I was Commander of Stark County Power Squadron. After a vote of the members at a district meeting, our burgee was chosen, from several finalists. The new burgee was approved by National, and first flew in the Summer of 1998 on the boats of D/7 members.
As far as heraldry
The colors red, white and blue were chosen due to the colors of our National Ensign. A gold (yellow) band was placed around the flag, since D/7 was already 50 years old back in 1997. A red 7 was chosen, and created in a block form, to make it more visible when flown while boating. A fouled line was wrapped around the 7, again due to the National Ensign having a fouled line around the anchor. This was changed slightly from the original design submitted for the contest. Seven larger-sizedwhite stars were placed in a circle around the 7, again due to the National Ensign having a circle of stars.
