Squadron Burgee Heraldry:

The lighthouse depicted is the Absecon Lighthouse. This was erected in 1865 at a cost of thirty-five thousand dollars. Its construction was supervised by George Gordon Meade, a graduate of West Point. Later, General Meade commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Gettysburg and defeated Lee in a three day battle.

The Absecon Lighthouse was commissioned in 1857 and the light went on 15 January. The Light was visible for twenty miles. In the early days kerosene was used. During the Summer two gallons of kerosene were used each night and during the winter three and a half gallons. The Lighthouse is 167 feet high and has 228 steps.

The principal organizer for its construction locally was Dr. Jonathan Pitney of Absecon, New Jersey. Dr. Pitney was also active in the founding of Atlantic City.

The Lighthouse was decommissioned 11 July 1933. It was given to Atlantic City for a park by the United States Government on 10 August 1946.
