Squadron Burgee Heraldry:

The story behind this burgee is the story of The Texas and The General. This story took place at what is now Lake Allatoona, the home port of the Atlanta Power Squadron.

On April 12, 1862, a raiding party of Federal soldiers, led by James J. Andrews, seized the State locomotive, The General, at Kennesaw, Georgia and steamed northward toward Chattanooga. Their intention was to destroy the railroad.

Immediate pursuit was joined by Captain William Fuller, Jeff Cain and Anthony Murphy. First afoot, then with a push car, they made the Etowah bridge and, on the locomotive Yonah, made six miles before they were stopped by a broken rail.

Again afoot, they ran until they met a down freight pulled by The Texas. They commandeered the engine and after the cars were side-tracked they continued the pursuit with The Texas in reverse.

Just above Ringgold, The General was abandoned and all twenty-two of the raiders were captured.

The Texas was in regular service until 1907. It is now on display at the Cyclorama in Atlanta.
