Squadron Burgee Heraldry:

The Red, White and Blue of the burgee symbolizes the Squadron's statement that is supports the principals of the United States. The vertical White and Blue stripes and Red field represent the USPS Ensign. The vertical Blue and White stripes remind the viewer that Ft. Macon served as a federal prison during the Civil War.

The Red field with the cannon inside the pentagon symbolizes that Ft. Macon has stood as a fortress through the Civil War, used by both Northern and Southern troops, the Spanish American War, and two World Wars by American troops. It stands for the blood that was shed during those wars.

The pentagonal figure in the Red field represents the fort itself, as the fort is a citadel with a moat surrounding the parapet from which cannoneers could defend the inlet, port city, Beaufort and Morehead the entrance to the Newport River. The cannon in the Red field inside the pentagon is shown in a firing mode, representing that Ft. Macon was at the ready off and on for over 100 years.
