Squadron Burgee Heraldry:

In 1961, a number of the members of the Long Beach Squadron who lived in the areas north of the main part of Long Beach began to think of forming a new squadron that would better serve the members who lived in this outer area.

Along with a Name and Charter application, a new burgee was also needed. With a train of thought that seems to go on to this day, the new squadron needed something different from the usual burgee of the time. Also, with moving, the proposed new squadron dropped anchor in the City of Lynwood and adopted the name "Lynwood Power Squadron".

After much trial and error, the new membership agreed on an all black burgee with a red ship’s wheel with an international code flag symbol Lima “L” for Lynwood and remembering the heritage of the squadron being formed out of the Long Beach PowerSquadron and the Light of knowledge in the wheel’s center. From a short distance away, many people expect to see that black ! burgee flying a skull and crossbones symbol, but the actual symbols tell of the U.S. Power Squadrons’ purpose. Namely, the black background represents the marine educational darkness that the help will try to steer a safe course through. Also at the time the membership looked at all the other yacht clubs and squadrons burgees wanting to have a distinctive burgee. there were no others with a black field.

The Lynwood Squadron went full-steam ahead however in the early 70’s, our geographical area expanded the squadron was growing. many opportunities to be of service to the new communities just being developed in surrounding area that a few years earlier had been orange groves and dairies. The Membership determined that a name change was needed to better describe the larger sphere of influence of the Squadron. When looking at a map of the area there are four natural boundaries: On the West, the Santa River, on the East, the San Gabriel River and on the North, the Rio Hon! do River and to the South, the Pacific Ocean.

Enclosed ! by three rivers, a location name seemed obvious, the “Three River Squadron”, but since our Southern California rivers are all cemented, and one name suggestion was “Cement Bottom Squadron”. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and “Three Rivers” in Spanish became “Tres Rios”. The “Tres Rios Squadron” hasn’t looked back since.

The unique black burgee was left unchanged a product of our history.
