Commander's Message

Cdr Andrew Penesavalle

As you will see in the submissions below from some of our bridge officers, we are off on another busy schedule trying to promote our USPS group and support the efforts of other organizations as they relate to boating activities and safety.

Some squadron members took part in the annual lake clean up efforts that is organized by Katherine Landing on Lake Mohave. Norm Dack, John Militello and I participated in the clean up and were joined by Jim and Cori Formolo and their daughter Lori. Jim and Cory are presently members of the class taking the ABC course. They have shown a great interest in joining our group and they will be a welcome addition. They have already given of their time to further the mission of the USPS.

For the clean up we split up in teams and Katherine Landing donates the use of their patio boats. After four hours in the sun trudging along the now empty beaches and coves and accumulating trash that had heretofore been a reminder of the selfish way so many people treat our public lands, we displayed a mountain of cans, bottles, abandoned beach chairs and canopy frames, plastic sheeting and just about anything else that would be found at any picnic site. The management at Katherine Landing then treated all the participants to a "food fest". This year the fare included lobster tails hot off the "barbie". Of course there were plenty of jumbo hot dogs too if that is what pleases you. Yours truly had a little of both……alright, so it was a lot of both.

The squadron is very pleased to take part in this event. We use the lake almost exclusively for our boating activities and it is only right that we give something back to the area that gives us so much enjoyment. Our participation in this event does not alter our commitment to the "Adopt A Cove" program.

I was very pleased to get our squadron approved for the Adopt A Cove program sponsored by the National Parks Service and the Lake Mead Recreation area. We have selected Ski Pass on Lake Mohave as our adopted cove and will do a thorough clean up of the cove three times during the year. PC Pat Bramble has agreed to chair the committee that will organize and schedule the clean up dates. Again, this is our squadron's way of giving back to the area from which we derive so much enjoyment. We challenge other squadrons that have not done so, to see if there is such a program in your area.

The District has professionally produced metal road side style signs available for distribution to squadrons and placement in the public view. Our problem is that local municipal and park rules prevent us from posting these very attractive signs. If anyone knows of a private entity that would welcome our sign and still give us exposure to the public, please let us know.

In closing I will once again mention and encourage all of you to establish your SailAngle account. The September/October issue of the Ensign has a good overview of what SailAngle is and what it can do for you. Please check it out on Page 18...………Andy Pensavalle
