Once again, D/28 had a good year. We collected a number of
awards at the Norfolk Governing Board. One very special award
was for achieving 1% or greater Growth. Only three Districts
in all of USPS received this award. And we won that because YOU
put on boating classes, recruited new members, and kept in touch
with current members so they didnt fall by the wayside.
Im sure well collect a number more awards in Dallas
in a few weeks, again because of YOU
.
Each of us is a marketeer for USPS. We all have opportunities
to spread the word through our various contacts. As an example,
the Vessel Safety Checks are 15% ahead of last year, a great
way to reach the public. The Power Of One program recognizes
that its the present members that get new members, one
at a time, so please do your part and bring in your one.
National has been working on corporate memberships and strategic
partnerships which will not only generate income but hopefully
eliminate our status as a well-kept secret.
Dallas is the site for our Annual Meeting in a few weeks, the
closest it has been in a long while. Come meet your National
officers and hear first hand whats going on to improve
our organization. And youll hear a number of seminars and
presentations. Many of those at the Governing Board were not
only interesting and informative, but also useful for our squadrons
and district. Another benefityoull make a lot of
new friends and acquaintances.
Recent years have been ones of change in USPS, but I felt this
past year had even more change, perhaps because the actions of
National were more visible to me. Our National leaders are working
hard to stop the membership decline and judging from the latest
reports, the retention portion has improved. National is working
on new marketing materials and has hired a marketing professional
to address the other part of membership.
USPS is now running in the black, not an easy task with declining
membership revenues. Reorganization has cut committees and travel
to be reimbursed. Eliminating one Governing Board was a big step.
And the reorganization approved at Norfolk allows our Operating
Committee to manage USPS in a timely manner.
Our National Educational department keeps cranking out new seminars
and incredibly improved course material such as Seamanship, Junior
Navigation, and Engine Maintenance which are selling at three
times the rate of a year ago. The updated Junior Navigation course
is generating renewed interest in Navigation. Phoenix just completed
a JN class with 10 people taking the exam. Seminars are great
vehicles to introduce the public to USPS, require much less effort
to put on than a Boating Course, and dont require that
attendees make the commitment of a Boating Course. Most squadrons
have sold a number of seminars; our Assistant NEO indicated that,
next to membership dues, profits from educational materials are
the greatest revenue producer to USPS. More than 8,000 copies
of seminars have been sold, and that was based on only four seminars;
in 2008 there will be more than a dozen seminars available.
One significant accomplishment for D/28 this year was to create
another provisional squadron, South Bay. They quickly found a
way to contribute when we discovered that Southwestern Yacht
Club could not host our Councils since they were remodeling.
South Bay stepped up to find a new venue for us in the interim
and host the Councils. For those not familiar with our South
Bay squadron, their region is from San Diego South to the Mexican
border and East to Arizona.
Our Spring Conference is at Phoenix this year. The Chief Commanders
representative to the Conference is none other than the immediate
past Chief Commander, Ernie Marshburn. He is one of the National
Bridge officers that has helped make the changes our organization
needs. Please come meet and talk to him. Hes young, personable,
obviously knowledgeable, and very easy to approach.
Ive certainly enjoyed my year as your District Commander.
Along the way, it allowed me to get better acquainted with many
great people and to meet many more. The recent squadron Change
Of Watch events let me meet and thank many of you in person.
I thank you all for your support to me, the bridge and to all
the departments. We are an organization of volunteers and thats
what makes it all possible.
