2019 Spring Seminar Offerings
These seminars are offered FREE for the Grand Traverse Bay Boating Public
April 24 Traverse City District Library Thirlby Room, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from using a moving map display in your car. This seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation. It then shows you how to relate the GPS to your charts, which provide essential information about what is around you.
The seminar teaches you how to operate your GPS - what the buttons do, what the screens show, and how to access the functions you will need. A handheld GPS is used as the demonstration model, but all GPS receivers function similarly. By the time you have completed the seminar, you will be able to store waypoints in your GPS, activate them for navigation, and use GPS to keep you on a safe, pre-qualified course of your choosing. You'll also learn about factors to consider when choosing a GPS if you don't currently own one.
Boat Pump Maintenance
May 29 Traverse City District Library Thirlby Room, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Pumps are one of the most important items on any Power or Sail Boat. If the raw water pump does not operate, the engine shuts down. If the bilge fills with water and the bilge pump does not operate, the boat sinks. If the circulating water pump for the air condition/heat does not operate, the boat is hot or cold depending on the weather. If the potable water pump does not operate, the crew cannot get water from the tank to the coffee pot (major problem!). In this seminar we will cover general operation, maintenance and overhaul of pumps.
June 12 Traverse City District Library Thirlby Room, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
At its simplest, marine navigation is the art and science of finding your way on the water. It has been used by boaters for centuries to get from point A to point B. Historically sailors navigated by the stars and constellations. To navigate today, the boater can use an IPhone or IPad and have a safe afternoon on the water. This seminar will introduce the boater to the Marine Navigation Apps available for electronic devices.
