Executive Officer
Jo Anne Waller

AHOY to all and a BIG Thanks for those who are covering for me while I am experiencing an extended stay in California assisting my son and daughter-in-law with a logistics problem regarding the grandchildren's school schedules. Shadow (my cat) and I are settled in (sort of) and speaking for myself only, I truly miss all of you, in addition to the lovely weather I know Arizona is experiencing right now (sans the wind, of course). Since I think they are such a great group, I have included a picture of my family:

My contact information is as follows: Corona Home (951) 734-3711; Cell (951) 733-3606 (same as before) and my email address is joawaller@gmail.com (same as before). My time in Arizona will be sporadic but I am attempting to attend as many meetings as possible. At this time I will be in AZ November 19th through the 29th (yes, bringing the cat).

District 28 Fall Conference

In the absence of our Commander (as you know, Linda and Andy were in Italy), it was my pleasure and privilege to have the honor of representing the Lake Mohave Power Squadron at the District 28 Fall Conference held in San Diego, California, September 26 and 27, 2009. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the Harbor Island Inn, San Diego Bayside, was an excellent venue. The San Diego Sail & Power Squadron is to be congratulated for the excellent conference organization and wonderful time we all had while in San Diego. I especially enjoyed meeting everyone and, trust me; the food was GREAT no matter where you dined!

Unfortunately I was unable to attend Friday's social at Brockway and Barbara Clark's home; however, Saturday morning started out early at 0830 with Call to Order by D/C Van Diehl, Invocation by D/Chaplin, P/C Robert Hubbard, Pledge of allegiance led by D/Lt/C Connie Johnson.

After introductions, an extremely informative seminar relating to SailAngle was presented by Randy White and Justin McChesney the two people who put together SailAngle, explaining how it can be used (or not used) and the fact that it is NOT a public website and only for our own use and information. Once I learn the program, I have been requested to either teach all of you the program, or to aid you individually to be sure that everyone in the squadron gets signed on. From the description by the above two individuals, this is an amazing program. Please know that SailAngle is a secure internet website which will facilitate the input and distribution of information only to members of USPS and each particularly District. All district members should sign on to it at www.sailangle.com. I enjoyed the seminar, learned quite a bit and have a CD for our use in both downloading the program and utilizing it as well. There is more to come for everyone on this subject.

Throughout the conference it was emphasized that the squadrons should start putting together and maintaining mentoring programs, seminars, Boat Owner Certifications (BOC) and on the water instruction in order to help maintain our members and in an effort to stop the decline in membership which has reached an astonishing 10% per year. Connie also requested that we find out where our sign will be place and I realize that we have hit blank walls on this. This will continue to be a work-in-progress until it is settled.

Reports were given by all Bridge Officers and Committee chairs, in addition to each squadron. South Bay Sail & Power Squadron is to be congratulated as it is no longer a provisional squadron. A motion was made to implement a member option for multi-year dues billing, automatic credit-card based dues renewal and an opt-out process for automatic dues payment. Motion carried. Most individual squadron reports were brief with the full report put in each squadron's mail box. When giving the Lake Mohave squadron report, I emphasized that we are a small squadron and that we are determined to retain our charter and increase our membership. Note from me: Considering how small we are, our membership involvement on a percentage-wise basis is awesome and I am proud of everyone.

Most of us attended and enjoyed a most interesting and informative seminar on radar presented by Van Diehl. I am now inspired to take a full-scale course on the subject.

The D/C's report is in the Fall 2009 issue of the Lead Line. National 50-year awards were given out to P/D/C Paul Schoonover (Phoenix), William Bardens (Balboa) And Monte Yearly (San Luis Rey).

District 28 Awards for education: Prince Henry for Advanced Grades, Donald L. Shockey Memorial Award for elective course and Ernie Casale Engine Maintenance trophy all went to San Luis Rey - CONGRATULATIONS TO SAN LUIS REY!

(More pictures from the D-28 Fall Conference can be seen be signing in to your SailAngle account, clicking on your Profile at the left of the page and then go down to D-28 Group, click on it and then click on photos from the Fall Conference ) By the way, the iridescent glasses Brockway is wearing were part of a fun item passed around to participants.

Sunday morning I attended the special meeting in Van Diehl's suite and he emphasized the face that we need a new "face" or "strategy" and that the Educational Committee was stressing seminars as a teaching tool. Everyone agreed that the economy situation did not help but that we also need to get updated in our attitudes (i.e.,. yes, we do need to get familiar with Twitter, Facebook and the like).

As an overall comment regarding the conference, I believe as many of us that are able should attend these District functions. It is a very positive way to meet and greet, get to know a lot of folks from other squadrons within our district. The dinner meeting and conclusion of the conference on Saturday night was a great crowd pleaser, the food was good, the raffle ticket prizes were great and a fun evening was had by all who attended.

Comments in General

I want to say thank you to all of you who are keeping our activities going. The Luau was great and I enjoyed myself a lot and as a result, I realized that I miss all of you. As I mentioned above, our percentage of involvement considering the size of our squadron is awesome! In addition to attempting to be at our meetings over the next few months, I hope to be in AZ when we reschedule the Adopt-A-Cove initial clean-up day……………………. Jo Anne Waller

We presently have an ABC course in progress. Mike Accardo was certified as an instructor early this year and he is assisting me with the course. We are hoping to get some new members from this group. All of them have shown an interest in joining the USPS and Al Trueman our membership committee chairman has been following up with the prospective members. He is fairly confident that his efforts are going to be rewarded……John Militello

Our October general meeting was, once again, held at El Rio Country Club. We are pleased with the new restaurant, Café 95, which has opened for business within the Club. The food and service was enjoyable. We will also have the November meeting in the same location.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our October 21 Lunch on the Lake, that was to be the kick off' of our Adopt A Cove program. Those darn ol' winds do tend to dictate our activities, don't they? I know Pat Bramble, who is heading the program for us will be scheduling another attempt in the future.

On Friday, October 30, we will have a booth at the Mohave Event Center in conjunction with the local fire departments who are having a Halloween Haunting. We will be giving away candy, youth boating literature, and promoting USPS. This is a first time venture, which, if successful, will become an annual affair. The booth will be manned from 5:00-10:00 p.m. Halloween attire optional, but could add to the spirit of the night.

Upcoming Events:
November 11.......General Meeting, El Rio C.C. 6:30 PM
November 18.......Happy Hour at the Riverside Gourmet Lounge
November 26.......Happy Thanksgiving!
December 09.......Holiday Party and Annual Meeting, Riverside Bridgeview Room
Invitations will be forthcoming.

To question or volunteer, give me a call
