Sail and Power Boating
Boating is fun..We'll show you how
The Squadron Boating Course is our primary civic effort toward public instruction in the fundamentals of safe boating. Both short Boat Smart (8-hour) and long Boat Smart + Chart Smart (12-hour) formats are designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating and qualify for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft. Subjects include:
Boat handling under normal conditions
- Adverse conditions and emergencies
- Types of boats and boating terminology
- Required and recommended equipment
- Boating regulations and navigation rules
- Lines and knots
- Marine radiotelephone usage
- Trailer boating
- Charts and aids to navigation (in 12-hour format only)
- Piloting techniques (in 12-hour format only)
Some insurance companies offer discounts on boat insurance for successful completion of the Squadron Boating or Boat Smart courses.

Tempe, AZAdditional recreational boating educational materials may be obtained from the United States Power Squadrons® (1-888-FOR-USPS) and include - a Video Boating Course and study guide, and Boat Pro©, a computer aided boating safety study program. An online or home study CD-ROM program called America's Boating Course© is a unique study program covering the fundamentals of boating. The course is designed for skippers and crew of all types of watercraft. The course material covers seven chapters, which touch on: general information about boats and maintenance, information to make your boating experience safer and more comfortable, tips on being a more courteous boat operator, and laws and regulations to which you must adhere.
Jet Smart© is a "personal watercraft" (PWC) safety course video and study guide designed for home study. Jet Smart is NASBLA- approved as meeting the minimum PWC certification requirements and is recognized by the Coast Guard. Subjects covered include: types of PWCs and PWC terminology, jet drive propulsion and steering, registration and environment, required and recommended equipment, safety and maintenance checklists, trailering and launching, boating regulations and navigation rules, personal watercraft operation and float plan.
