Katherine Landing D-28 Rendezvous
April 8 - 10, 2011 |
By Lt/C Dan Sheen
The highlight of the past month for me was the Katherine Landing
trip on April 8-10. Attendees from Phoenix included Bill and
Connie Johnson, Terry and Jean Grey, Art Ashton, and Dan Sheen
(me) and my son, Peter Sheen. Bill Bridge came up from San Diego
with a friend Don Cotton. Our hosts from Mohave included John
and Jean Militello, Norm and Sharon Dack, Mike and Barb Accardo,
JoAnne Waller, Al and Eileen Trueman, and Joe and Sharon Weller.
The weather started out really bad and we hit SNOW in Kingman.
Once we got to Lake Mohave the weather cleared and everyone bundled
up a bit for appetizers with the Mohave squadron providing the
hot ones. My son, Peter stayed in bed through most of the appetizers
but then laid his ears back and cornered some pineapple meatballs
as people were headed home.

Really cool dockThe participants were bundled up against
the unseasonably cold weather at the Katherine Landing rendezvous.

Pontooning on the ColoradoBill Johnson and Sharon and Joe
Weller brave the elements. |
The weather the next day was cloudy and threatening but pretty.
There was a little window of opportunity and three boats went
out. Joe and Sharon were joined by Bill Johnson on their pontoon.
With the marginal weather, we had the ramp to ourselves and the
boats took over the end of the courtesy dock
Terry and Jean took out their boat Time Out. Art Ashton
joined Peter and I on Aquastar. We were followed back
to the Marina by a small storm. Yours truly was the last one
back but Art Ashton did some speedy trailer work and we beat
the rain by nearly a full minute.

The weather outside threatens - Time to retreat to the inside.

Blustery only outsideTerry and Jean Gray with Connie and
Bill Johnson find a snug harbor at Lake Mohave.

Restaurant SceneMore, including Art Ashton, P/D/C Bill
Bridge from California and Peter Sheen, far from the madding
crowd, enjoy the warmth of companionship and a proper heater. |
Because the weather was threatening the normal Saturday Night
Barbeque was cancelled and everyone ate at the restaurant.
The final day was a joy with absolutely no wind. Bill Johnson
joined Terry and Jean on Time Out and Art joined me and my son,
Peter, on Aquastar and we made a speed run up to Cottonwood Marina.
Lots of largemouth bass were on spawning beds on the shoreline
by the marina dock. I was able to purchase a rare Cottonwood
Cove refrigerator magnet for the my family collection.
