Boating Course Desriptions

Our boating courses are open to all members of the public. The courses are designed to be of interest to the entire family and we encourage you and your family to attend as a group.

Successful completion of our courses satisfies the New York State requirements for a boating safety certificate that is required for any person (any age) to operate a personal watercraft (PWC)

Children between the ages of 10 and 18 must have a boating safety certificate from an approved course in order to operate a power boat of any type.

All course instruction provided by members of the Syracuse Sail and Power Squadron as a public service.

The Squadron Boating Course
The Squadron Boating Course
is a ten-session course which includes everything in Boat Smart plus some basic navigation and several other topics of value to boaters.

Each two hour class for adults is designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating. Subjects include boat handling under normal conditions; adverse conditions and emergencies; types of boats and boating terminology; required and recommended equipment; boating regulations and navigation rules; lines and knots; charts and aids to navigation; piloting techniques; marine radiotelephone usage and trailer boating. Successful completion of the course as evidenced by a passing grade on the examination satisfies the New York State requirements for a boating safety certificate to operate Personal Water Craft. Many marine insurance policies provide discounts when the principal operator has successfully completed the course.

Boat Smart ®
Boat Smart ®
is a four to five session course for ages 15 and up. The course meets New York State requirements for certification and will include Personal Watercraft (PWC) certification.

The New York State Safe Boating Course for Youth
The New York State Boating Course is a four to five session course for ages 10-18. The two hour class each night presents applicable Federal, State and local laws, topics in boating safety and basic boat operation. Topics include general information concerning boats and maintenance; information to make your boating experience safer and more comfortable; tips on how to be a more courteous boat operator and laws and regulations to which you must adhere. It applies to all watercraft including powerboats, personal watercraft and manually-driven boats such as sailboats and canoes. Youth between the ages of 10 and 18 must have a boating safety certificate from an approved course in order to operate a power boat of any type. For Personal Water Craft operators of any age must have a certificate.
