Teaching a safe boating course is a traditional civic service of the United
States Power Squadrons organization. Since 1914 local squadrons have presented
a course to anyone who wished to attend - to date more than 3 million people.
Learning to boat safely is important and the increased knowledge will enhance
your safety on the water and your enjoyment of the sport.
The Squadron Boating Course class is a course for all boaters( the personal
watercraft operator; the hunter or fisherman operating an outboard utility
boat; the skipper of a family cruiser; the sailing enthusiast). All boaters
must follow the same nautical rules, regulations, and courtesies of the sea.
All are subject to the same forces of nature while boating.
As boating is often a family activity, the course is of value to all members
of a boating family. USPS encourages families to attend as groups.
After completing this course and passing the exam, you are eligible for
membership in the Anclote Key Sail and Power Squadron which will allow you
additional opportunities for further education in many areas of boating.
Also, many insurance companies provide a discount for completing courses
such as The SQUADRON BOATING COURSE.
While the student manual serves as a basis for this course, it will also serve
as a reference book in basic boating long after the course is completed. The
course meets the educational standards of the National Association of State
Boating Law Administrators and features a proctored examinaton as required by
many states and insurance companies.
America's Boating Course (ABC) is a joint project between USPS and the Coast Guard Auxiliary that can be ordered over the internet or purchased from the Squadron Educational officer and comes with a manual and a CD. This is ideal for those that don't have the time for scheduled classes. It is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). After studying the course the student contacts the Squadron SEO, Howard O. Mielke, 727-785-7923. For a nominal fee the student receives a proctored examination. This is a requirement to receive a certificate and for state acceptance.
Additional boating courses are available to members of the Anclote Key Sail and Power Squadron. These include Seamanship, Piloting, Celestial Navigation, Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sailing and much more.
In addition, USPS offers more than two dozen self study course on such subjects as the Water Sports, Boat Insurance, Oceanography, Introduction to Sailing, and much more.
