WINTER/SPRING  COURSES
See Course Schedule

Eighteen (18) hours of formal instruction in the following subjects: Safety Afloat; Basics of Seamanship; Hull Types & Terminology; Small Boat Handling; Trailering; State and Federal Regulations; Rules of the Road; Recognition of Aids to Navigation; Use of the Mariners’ Compass; Speed - Time - Distance Computations; Chart Reading and Course Plotting; and, Fundamentals of Coastwise Navigation.

Register at the Hingham Middle School cafeteria, 1103 Main St. Hingham. Because of the large number of enrollments experienced in the past two years, we have found it necessary to limit the class size. Therefore, to assure your placement in the March class, your Advance Registration and check should be received no later than Saturday, two weeks before the course starts. A few "walk-in" registrations may be accepted on a space available basis the evening of the first class, but we suggest that you arrive no later than 6:30 PM!

This course is directed to Adults and Mature Teens and, presents 20 hours of formal instruction in the subjects indicated on the enclosed Class Schedule. Except as indicated, the class will meet each Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (NO CLASS WILL BE HELD during school break). Homework is assigned weekly as indicated in the Course Schedule, and is a requirement of the course.

Nationally Certified Instructors, who are Members of the Bare Cove Sail & Power Squadron, will present the course. It will conclude with a "closed book" written examination on a Wednesday, mid-May. Although this course is designed primarily for Adults and Mature Teens, it also meets the educational requirements of all states for powerboat operators between the ages of 12 and 16. Students under the age of 16, if accepted, will be administered [and graded on] the written examination prescribed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A test score of, at least, 80% in both examinations is required for Massachusetts certification.

All necessary course text and materials are supplied and consist of:

The USPS student text "The Squadron Boating Course©";
Bare Cove Squadron’s proprietary student text
"Charting and Elementary Coastal Navigation©";
USPS
Course Plotting Protractor; Weems & Plath Dividers; and, 2 Practice Charts No.1210-TR (Vineyard Sound) and "Bowditch Bay".

The first family member enrolled in the course will receive each of the above items and a charge of $100 will be made to cover the cost of course texts and materials. Whereas the use of the Course Plotter and Dividers may be shared, additional family members who are enrolled in the course [resident at the same address as the initial enrollee] will receive each of the above items, EXCEPT the Course Plotter and Dividers, at the reduced charge of $80.

Please make your check, in the appropriate amount, payable to Bare Cove Squadron.
Send it with your Advance Registration, two weeks before the start date to:
Bare Cove Sail & Power Squadron, P.O. Box 11 – Accord Station, Hingham, MA 02018-0011
