Commander’s Message 05-15-09

Greetings All,

Now that the snow and cold is behind us and the boating season is here, let’s hope it will be a better season than last year weather-wise and a safe season as well. Unfortunately, it may not be a better season economically.

Let me assure you, Bare Cove Sail & Power Squadron will continue to move forward to ensure that safe boating education is our number one priority for you and your family.

By now, you have received your membership renewal notice. In this volatile economy, we are hoping you will again renew your membership with Bare Cove. Like you, the Squadron too suffers from this economical crisis. Many of you have been members for many years and we hope that you will stay with us to ensure Bare Cove will still be your squadron in the future. We strive to keep the membership dues as low as possible so that it is affordable for you and your family. USPS has moved into the 21st century and now you can renew easily on line.

Education news!!

So far this year, our basic boating course registration reached an all-time LOW. We had only 14 people register. In the past, we’ve had two to three times that amount of registrations.

The Boat Smart course has had a great increase at the Scituate Gates Middle-School with 25 children enrolled. Another class will have to be scheduled the beginning of the Fall season to accommodate all the students there. The Hingham Middle-School will be starting the Boat Smart course and have 19 students registered. These two courses remain free.

The Norwell school system has inquired about teaching the Boat Smart course to their students. If all goes well, we intend to start teaching there next year.

The Bare Cove Power Squadron educators are the absolute best and they should be commended for their efforts and donation of time. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of men and women and welcome anyone who would like to assist with teaching your children and grandchildren.

Our Seamanship course is underway at the Hingham Middle School and will run until June 10th.

In the Fall, we are hoping to offer the Piloting Course. Please check the website for upcoming info.

Coming Events!

This year will be Bare Cove Power Squadron’s 50th Anniversary. We are in the process of planning a celebration sometime in October or early November on a Sunday afternoon. Be on the lookout for details and be sure to check our website. We will be requesting information/photos from the past.

Please feel free to share some of your boating experiences with us. We look forward to hearing from you.

I wish you and your families a safe and fun-filled boating season.

Marie A. Ferrante, Commander

Bare Cove Sail & Power Squadron
