DON'T FORGET THE MAGIC FORMULA
FOR CONVERTING A TRUE COURSE TO A MAGNETIC COURSE FOR STEERING !

TO CONVERT FROM TRUE TO COMPASS:

  • TRUE COURSE
  • ADD WESTERLY VARIATION (subtract Easterly)
  • MAGNETIC COURSE
  • ADD WESTERLY DEVIATION (subtract Easterly)
  • COMPASS ("Steering") COURSE

WHEN CONVERTING FROM A COMPASS COURSE TO A TRUE COURSE, SIMPLY REVERSE THE PROCEDURE AND REVERSE THE SIGNS - ADD EAST - SUBTRACT WEST

If you have not already done so, it is strongly recommended that you obtain a copy of "CHAPMAN PILOTING, SEAMANSHIP & SMALL BOAT HANDLING" (62nd Edition; Elbert S. Maloney; Hearst Marine Books). This is the acknowledged text for the small boating community and covers substantially every element which is presented in the Squadron Boating Course, and then some ! It really is an indispensible book for cold winter evening reading and a ready reference while afloat.
