Commander
Cdr Robert E. Shepard JN

I was born in Seattle and lived in the Northwest nearly all of my life except for a short time in California where I met Delores 48 years ago, ran off to Reno and got married. We have two sons, Glen and Greg.

I was away in the service from July 1948 to May 1952 and spent nearly all of that time on US Army vessels either on the East Coast or in the Korean War. In 1949 I took a USPS Piloting class at Newport News, Virginia but didn’t stick with the program. I became a bosun on a sea going rescue tug .I was skipper on three different boats in the Korean War, one being a 45 Ft. tug with a very powerful Buda diesel engine.

We live on Hartstene Island at the northern point 5 minutes away from our vessel "Highland Mist", so even though I may not go out every day I can at least go down and visit her and tell her how much I love her and give her a little pat on the transom.

In 2003 I got a vessel safety check at Port Orchard and got back into The Bremerton Sail & Power Squadron. I can’t remember who gave me the VSC or who told me how easy it would be to serve on the bridge. Here I am.

Alice served as the treasurer for the Bremerton Sail and Power Squadron in the mid-1990's, and was asked to take the position again in 2004. She enjoys this position as this allows her to contribute to the Squadron while caring for her husband's great aunt at their home in Port Orchard. She is a native of Michigan and moved to the area in 1980, and considers Washington her home. She is a nurse by profession, and spent 20 years working at Harrison Medical Center. Currently, she and Don are without a boat, unless you count the little sailing dinghy in the rafters of their garage.
