Fraternal Activities
Boating Events:

Raft-Ups on Lake Wylie
A number of
boats will tie up on Lake Wylie, usually in a quiet cove, and
all participants visit each other, share the drinks they brought
and the good food they prepared. It helps when most of the boats
are pontoon boats.
We usually
leave at 6 p.m. from the Tega Cay Marina. For this year we have
two raft-ups scheduled (See
Calendar of Events).
Raft-ups are a
nice opportunity for members who do not own a boat to
join other members on their boat.
Here are some photos of
one of the
raft-up outings.

Epicurean Events:

Our members do like to go to
parties, and our parties always feature good food, good drinks and good
fun.

Civic Service Activities
Vessel Safety Check

Even if you pay careful attention to
safety, dangerous mechanical problems can crop up on the best-maintained
boat. That's why the U.S. Coast Guard recommends that all recreational
boaters (including personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free
Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year.
VSC's are offered by 10 qualified vessel
safety inspectors of the Catawba Sail & Power Squadron. A VSC is your best
way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or
federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the
water.

The annual Children's Outing sponsored by the Charlotte and
Catawba Power Squadrons takes place in the summer at Bowater Park in Little
Allison Creek of Lake Wylie.
See
Calendar of Events for exact
details!
For over 40 years hundreds of children
from North & South Carolina are treated to a day of fun and recreation on
Lake Wylie, made possible by fund-raising activities of the Catawba and
Charlotte Power Squadrons. The children selected have not been as lucky as
most children are today. Some have lost their parents, or are foster kids or
abused kids, or kids who might have had a brush with police. Many have never
been in a boat or even had a fun day at a lake.
The Squadron provide boat
rides on Lake Wylie from Bowater Park in Little Allison Creek,
swimming, fishing, and games. Wendy's has supplied all of the food and
drinks, and provided workers to serve the food, which frees some of
the funds of the Power Squadrons to do other good deeds. Thank you, Wendy's!
We have nearly
400 children participating and they all have a good day and always ask us if
they can come back next year.

Adopt-a-Landing
on Lake Wylie
Three times a
year we hold our Adopt-a-Landing cleanup, cleaning two boat
landings on Lake Wylie from debris. (March, June and September -
see
Calendar of Events for
exact dates).
One group of volunteers is working on David Nivens Creek Landing
and another one works in the Rock Hill area to clean the public
boat landing on Big Allison Creek.
This job is easy and takes only
approx. 2 hrs. Volunteers are needed.

Selling Hot
Dogs, Burgers and Soft Drinks

One of our fund raising
activities is to have volunteers working a concession
stand at two Charlotte Knights games.
The CPS receives at least
$250 per game when 10 volunteers show up. We
use the funds to support the Children's Outing, the Change of Watch and
other Squadron activities.
We
are continuing with this fund raising activity and we are looking for
volunteers. If you want to volunteer or have any questions, call:
P/C Jack
Gwynne at (803) 548-6979.
Garage Sale
in Rock Hill
Once a year, usually at
the end of April, we sponsor a Garage Sale in the parking lot
of the Oakland Baptist Church in Rock Hill. Leigh Van Blarcom is in charge
and is assisted by a group of hard working volunteers, meeting there at
0700, which is 7 a.m., which is really early!
Check the
Calendar of Events for the exact
date for the current year!
Since all items for the
Garage Sale are donated, the Squadron normally has a nice profit , which
will be used to assist various good causes, such as the Children's Outing.
Here are some photographic
souvenirs of this fun event.
