Commander’s Message

A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE    JANUARY 2008

Happy New Year!!

As we leave the “Old” and approach the “New”, I look forward to the “Change of Watch” approaching soon,  Sunday , January 13, at Valley Brook Country Club. This is a great place with a delicious buffet, planned for us by our own Norm Oien.

It is important that you make plans to attend and show your support for the new Bridge as they take their pledge to serve YOU in the new year. It is also an opportune time to recognize and express appreciation for those who have served so diligently over the past year. Let's make this our best year ever by resolving to support our Squadron in ever way we can. Let's start with our ATTENDANCE at this important event! A wise person recently said, (District Commander Janis Owens) “Involvement and Commitment make the difference between wishing and doing”.

I am proud of what we accomplished last year and I thank you for your efforts in that regard; but, I urge you to continue your efforts, and if you have not yet gotten involved, I encourage you to make this the year. Remember our squadron is Hosting the District 17 Spring Meeting March 7 thru 9, 2008 at the Comfort Inn, 6710 Ringgold Road, Chattanooga, TN 37412. Let's consider it mandatory that we all commit to participating. It's so much fun to attend the work  shops and meet the people from around the District.

Thanks to Molly and Lloyd Cox for their wonderful hospitality extended to our membership in hosting our annual Christmas gathering and meeting at their home on Montlake.  Lynda DiPrima, on behalf of the Samaritan Center and  the families who benefited from your generosity, express their appreciation and thanks to all who donated toys/gifts for these needy children.

The membership voted and unanimously approved the new slate of officers for the year 2008. I am very proud and appreciative of this new group of Officers and Committee heads.

I wish to personally introduce your new Commander and his wife, Joe and Carole Blass. I have known them since their arrival in Chattanooga some four years ago. They bring an energy and excitement matched only by their warmth and fun loving spirit. Dedicated to family, each other and the goals of USPS, they have generously agreed to share their experience and leadership with the Chattanooga Sail and Power Squadron. They came to Chattanooga at the urging of their daughter and son-in-law, who live on Signal Mountain. Joe and Carole have a condominium apartment at Harborpoint, on the north shore of Tennessee River, just upstream of the Chickamauga Dam. Sailboat owners for many years, they now have a 24' Bayliner hardtop in a slip at Harborpoint. Joe is an engineer, retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and, before transferring to the Chattanooga Squadron, was a long-time member and Past Commander of the Oak Ridge Squadron. He is proud of his participation in a few interesting yacht deliveries, including one from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Lisbon, Portugal.

We are indeed fortunate to have Joe and Carole Blass. They are truly involved and committed to serving the Chattanooga Sail and Power Squadron. Let's give them our wholehearted support!

I would like to remind everyone of the need for volunteers to man the Chattanooga Sail and Power Squadron Booth at the Annual Boat Show held at the Marriott Convention Center February 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th.
