Public Boating Classes

Classes in basic boating safety are being held, or will be held, in several locations starting in late January. Call Neil Steiger at 216-283-7452 for details, or search using the link below this listing:

February 19, nine tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:30PM, Boating class, Lake County Yacht Club, 35979 Lakeshore Blvd., Eastlake, OH 44095, Call 216-283-7452 to register. In progress. Closed.

March 6, eight thursday evenings, 7:00-9:00 PM, BoatSmart class, Lakeland Community College, Rt. 306 at I-90, Kirtland, OH, In progress. Closed.

April 19, two saturdays, 9AM-2PM, BoatSmart class, Edgewater Yacht Club, 6700 Memorial Shoreway, N.W., Cleveland OH 44102, Call 216-283-7452 for info. Still open as of April 1.

Boating Safety Course Description

How long does it take? - 16-18 hours - Typically two hours per evening, meeting once a week for eight or nine weeks.

What's Covered? - Basic terms , State laws, Required and recommended equipment, Meaning of lights and markers on boats, and on the water and shore, Anchoring, Basic knots, Marine radio, Reading charts, Plotting courses, Speed, time, and distance calculations

BoatSmart® Course Description

How long does it take? - 10 hours - Typically five hours per day for two days, or two hours per evening for five evenings.

What's covered? - Same as Boating Safety, somewhat condensed, but charts and plotting are excluded.

 

Costs, Certificates, etc

How much do Boating Safety and BoatSmart cost? - Cost varies depending on location. Typically $30 per person, plus $50 for Boating Safety materials (manual, plotter, dividers, chart), which may be shared. Cost of materials for BoatSmart is $20 per manual.

Do these courses satisfy State of Ohio's education requirement? - Yes they do. This requirement applies to people born on or after January 1, 1982 who wish to operate power craft with engines 10 HP or more.

Will I get a discount on my insurance? - Probably yes. Many insurance companies give discounts to people who pass these courses.

If I pass, will I get a certificate? - Yes you will. You will get State certification as well as Power Squadron certification. However it is possible to meet State requirements but not meet Power Squadron requirements and vice versa.

What if I meet Power Squadron requirements? - You will be eligible to join United States Power Squadrons®.
