Learn the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation plus basic piloting in one comprehensive classroom course. This newly revised course will give you the basics of line throwing, knot tying, boat handling, and seamanship. Instructors have many years of boating experience shared between inland waters and Lake Erie. An officer of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources participates as a guest speaker at one class. This 8 week course includes 3 sessions on charting and aides to navigation. You will learn basic chart plotting and time & speed calculations. This is especially useful for the big water boaters. This 8 week course is recommended because of its detailed course study. Completion of the course qualifies you for Power Squadron membership and the opportunity to take our more advanced member courses. Successful completion of our basic boating public course will result in you receiving a certificate of safe boating from the State of Ohio.
The course was $40.00 but now it's free due to funding available through the Judy A. Lowe Education Fund.

Topics include:

  • Safety on the water
  • Boat handling
