January - 19 |
Morgan Creek Grill
Restaurant, lunch is planned
for 1130. January Cruise to Morgan Creek Grill at the Isle of Palms Marina
Our January cruise on January 19th, will take us
to the Morgan Creek Grill at the Isle of Palms Marina.
Driving directions to the restaurant are
provided below. For those braving the January temperatures the
restaurant is located on the ICW between “R116” and “G115”. Keep in
mind there are 2 no wake zones between the harbor and the restaurant,
the first at the ICW entrance from the harbor, the second at the IOP
Marina.
There is dock space at the Morgan Creek Grill for approximately 10 boats on the waterway side of the dock and 4 on the interior. It is transient docking, first-come, first-serve basis. For any vessels larger than 24 feet, the captain will need to contact the Isle of Palms Marina for space to dock.
Please plan to arrive at the restaurant by
1130. We will be seated on the upper deck area of the restaurant, so
we’ll have a great view of the ICW and Morgan Creek and the IOP
Marina. We will need a fairly accurate “head/boat” count to plan the day and make arrangements for your boating needs. Please contact us either by email at mubill@yahoo.com or by phone at 843-471-2390 and let us know if you plan to attend, if you will be traveling by boat or by car and if you would like to crew for someone or if you have space available in your boat. The phone number for Morgan Creek Grill is 843-886-8980. The website address is: http://www.morgancreekgrill.com/ Hope you can be there!
Driving Directions: Don’t forget the annual cruise to the Cape Romain lighthouse which will take place February 23rd, more details to follow.

All vessels are requested to rendezvous at the Leland Marine in Jeremy Creek at McClellanville Friday afternoon or evening on February 29, 2008. Otherwise you may arrive Saturday morning before Noon. Departure for the Cape will occur at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 1, 2008 with the high tide at 1:28 pm. Any vessel needing assistance shall be promptly given high priority, and all passengers should be safely removed before any vessel sinks. Adequate libations must be provided all crews and passengers, especially upon return to Jeremy Creek. Additionally, dinner will be held at “TW Grahams Store” at 1800. Cars must be provided for adequate transportation to the local cookery shop where all will enjoy dinner and sundry fun. April 11-13 |
LH/CPS Joint Cruise to Short StayApril Cruise Cooper River to Lake MoultrieApril 11-12, 2008 Come one, come all, for a great journey up the Cooper River through the Pinopolis Lock at Santee Cooper's Jefferies Hydroelectric Station and out to the vast boundaries of Lake Moultrie. This great odyssey will occur on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Our sister squadron, Lake Hartwell, will trailer their boats to Charleston and join us for this sojourn. We plan to meet with our sister squadron on Friday evening for drinks and dinner at a downtown location. If you would like to join us for some land-based fun on Friday evening, contact Angela Wright at 843-899-8329 or awright@gates.com. On Saturday morning, you can either drive your car, launch your boat at various boat ramps, or you can join the flotilla and boat up the Cooper River to meet everyone for lunch at Short Stay the Navy’s recreation facility in Moncks Corner. It’s about fifty miles up the river from Charleston, and the journey should take about 2.5-hrs from our Bushy Park starting point, so we will need to leave early. For those of you who plan to join the flotilla, we are going to rendezvous at Bushy Park Boat Landing (Channel Marker 90 or coordinates 32° 58.18N 079° 55.60W) at 0900 sharp for the 2.5-hour ride to Lake Moultrie. We will monitor Channel 16 and operate on Channel 68. We welcome all to join us especially those with boats that need to have the Strawberry Landing (6.5 ft closed vertical clearance) railroad bridge opened. I have spoken with the bridge operator who tells me we need to call the day before to make arrangements. I will coordinate the Strawberry bridge opening for our flotilla with a planned opening of 1145 on Saturday April 12, 2008. The bridges are operated from 7AM to 3:30PM daily. On Saturday afternoon, we will have a hamburger/hotdog cookout at the Edisto pavilion at Short Stay. Cost will be $5.00 per person and it includes your drink. If you could bring a small dish/dessert to augment our grill it would be most appreciated. We have passes for 100 members, so let’s have a big turnout and provide a great southern welcome to our Lake Hartwell members. If you do not want to take your boat, please come by car and join us for the cookout and afternoon fun. We plan to begin cooking as soon as the flotilla arrives. We will play in the lake Saturday afternoon and enjoy the beaches of the Short Stay facility. On Saturday evening, we will go across the lake for dinner at Black’s Camp and Restaurant. They specialize in steaks, seafood and catfish and I understand the cuisine is very good. Most folks plan to sleep on the hook or have reserved a room at the Short Stay facility. Rooms are available in Moncks Corner at the Berkeley Motel (843) 761-8400 or the Holiday Inn Express (843) 761-7509. For information and planning purposes, the Short Stay facility has gasoline but no shore power. On Sunday morning, we will take our Lake Hartwell guests back to Charleston to retrieve their trailers, and return to the Short Stay facility for loading and departure back home. This cruise should be a great adventure! Since I do not know the times or numbers of boats returning down the Cooper River, I am providing you with the number of the Bridge tender to make your returning reservations to open the Strawberry Bridge. Remember you must contact them a day in advance at 843-899-7647. Please note, I need a fairly accurate “head/boat” count to plan the day and make arrangements for your boating needs. Call me at 843-767-1491 or 843-514-9638 by April 10, 2008. Let me know if you plan to drive, trailer your boat, boat up the river independently, or join our flotilla. Morris Island and Pot Luck at 1200 We had such a great time; we decided to do it again. On May 24th, bring your entire family as we cruise to Morris Island for food and a fun filled beach day. We will rendezvous at the Charleston Harbor Marina at the outer dock (A) at 1100. The caravan will begin to head to the Island at 1130. It will take approximately 30 minutes to reach the Island. Since low tide is 1449, we should all have plenty of draft to get there without any problems. If you want people to meet you, they can be at dock A for pick up (it is about 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot). We will go past Fort Sumter and then past the range light, and turn to the Starboard, then head up the channel between the Islands. Fort Sumter is on the right and Morris Island is on the left. From the range light, looking at Morris Isle, our landing point will be to the right side of Morris Isle. Last year, several boats headed toward Dynamite Hole and found better water depth. They came to Morris Isle and followed it around counter clock wise to the beach and landing area. Be sure to anchor about 30 feet off the beach because it is shallow for quite a ways out. BJ Smith has offered taxi service for those needing a ride to the island from their boat anchorage. We are planning to bring a few tables and have a potluck on the beach. There will be a small grill available if you want to toss on a couple of hot dogs and/or hamburgers. So bring on the goodies!!! Afterwards, from eating all of the wonderful food and Goodies everyone has brought, a stroll around the island may be required. If you're not up to a stroll, we'll have volleyball, ring toss, and frisbees to play with. Things to consider bringing for your comfort: ice cold drinks, blanket/chair, bug spray, suntan lotion, and umbrella. Don’t forget, this is a beach setting with lots of sand. See you at the Island! Dewees and Capers Islands Exploration 1300 Potluck
Explore the isolated waterways surrounding Dewees & Capers Islands starting at 1000 Sat June 21 adjacent to the Isle of Palms Marina near ICW marker 116. The SS Minnow will lead the ChPS fleet on explorations of Dewees, Capers & Price Creek Inlets. Nature and Atlantic Ocean views abound. Best navigated on vessels 30ft or less, passages will be restricted to waters exceeding 8 ft depth. Several opportunities for intentional beachings and a short walk on Capers Island are possible. Our route was recently surveyed for navigability at any tide. Vessels will raft or otherwise assemble for a potluck lunch around 1300 at a location convenient for all. Arrangements are being made for discounts at the IOP Marina for those wishing to launch near our destination. Parking and dockage is available for guest pick-up. As always, bring your beachwear, repellants, suntan lotions, dish to pass and refreshments of choice. Cruise Captain Jim & Nancy Hackett
