America’s Boating Course

The basic boating safety course, called America’s Boating Course (ABC), is designed to meet the minimum requirements to obtain the Florida Safe Boating ID required by law for boaters born after January 1, 1988.

This comprehensive class is 8 hours in duration and is normally scheduled for two consecutive Saturdays (four hours each day) at the Crystal River Power Squadron building in Crystal River.

ABC was developed as a joint effort between the United States Power Squadrons and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It covers basic characteristics of boats (power, sail and jet skis), safety equipment required by the US Coast Guard and the State of Florida, docking, anchoring, trailering, and boat handling in adverse weather conditions.  The course includes the Rules of the Road, recognizing navigation lights, aids to navigation, and use of the marine radio.  And you'll learn how to tie some basic knots. (There is a minimal charge for course materials.)

Successful completion of ABC not only qualifies you for the Florida Safe Boating ID, but may earn you a discount on your vessel insurance policy, as well as entitling you to membership in America’s largest boating club, United States Power Squadrons, and the local unit, Crystal River Power Squadron.
