| The Cutler Cove Power Squadron
offers free public boating courses. These courses will qualify
you for insurance discounts and meet the State of Florida requirements
for boating certification for all persons born after September,1980.
The next course starts Tuesday, September 16, 2008 and runs for five weeks on Tuesday nights from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Palmetto Middle School, 7351 SW 128th Street, Pinecrest, Florida. Boat Handling and Elementary Seamanship Boat Types and Terms Registration (State and Federal) Equipment Regulations Safe Operations Marlinespike Seamanship (learn to tie 5 basic knots) Charts and Aids to Navigation Basic Navigation (includes Biscayne Bay) Piloting (includes use of 11451 Chart) Navigation Rules (Rules of the Road) Marine Radio Trailer Boating Personal Water Crafts The instruction is free, with a nominal charge for the optional student manual. WHO WE ARE The Cutler Cove Power Squadron is a local chapter of the United States Power Squadrons. The squadron's membership and activities are located in the Kendall, Pinecrest and Cutler Ridge areas of SW Miami, Florida. The squadron was founded in 1965 and presently has approximately 100 members. Membership activities are divided into three areas: volunteer civic activities, advanced self boating education and social activities. Civic activities include teaching the public safe boating course three times a year (January, April and September), providng free vessel safety inspections and assisting NOAA with maintaining chart information through the squadron's volunteer co-operative charting program. Self-education activities include taking or teaching any of the approximately twenty USPS advanced boating courses (seamanship, piloting, advanced piloting, weather, sailing, engine maintenance, marine electronics, celestial navigation, etc.). These courses are only available to USPS members. Passing the public safe boating course is a prerequisite to joining USPS. Social activities include monthly dinner meetings, parties, BBQ, fishing and boating rendezvous.
