Report on the D14 Vessel Safety Check Program
for the October 3 District Council Meeting

story of blonde who took up ice fishing – “the rink is closed”

I’m here to report that the VSC program in D14 is alive and well.

We have 42 VEs with at least 2 in each of the 8 squadrons in District 14. That is 4 more VEs in total than we had last year. We are ahead of the total number of VSCs done last year which was 436 and with 3 months to go, as the program continues through the calendar year, the 496 we have so far no doubt will far exceed last years total.

The national average is 13 VSCs per VE currently. We are in good shape because our VE average is 14 VSCs. We have a couple of VEs who are in the 30 VSCs range, one who is at 49 VSCs and another who is over 100 VSCs. But, on the other end, we have 7 VEs who have done 0 VSCs and the majority of them operate over the bridges on Cape Cod. What, no boats left for them to safety check!?

There is still time. Many people are still boating. A VE can check boats in any state, at any time, even when on vacation. Help us get the message of boating safety out to boaters within the next three months. Have your own boats safety checked. Refer your friends to us. Work with us for part of a day – remember, its Merit Mark time. What have you done for USPS lately?

Lastly, a reminder for Squadron Commanders: November 15th is the deadline for submitting an annual report of your inventory of the inflatable life jackets that have been loaned to each squadron. Details and forms are on the National VSC web site or you can contact me for more information.

Respectfully submitted,

P/D/C W. Lee Blackburn, SN
District 14 Vessel Safety Check Program Chairman
