District 19
is one of the 33 districts of the United States
Power Squadrons®, the world's largest private, non-profit boating organization.
District 19 (D19) includes squadrons in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, and
extends from Lake Champlain on the west to the Gulf of Maine on the east, with
many great lakes and rivers nestled in between !
D19 currently represents ten
squadrons with around 1000 members.
Nationwide,
there are around 450 local Power Squadrons providing boating safety, education
and related recreational services to the 40,000 members they represent. The
national United States Power Squadron is the
umbrella organization for what has become known as "America's
Boating Club."
Activities
The District and Squadron
activities relate to three USPS® objectives; community service, continuing
education, and enjoying
the friendship and camaraderie of fellow members. As a member you will join with
knowledgeable boaters in your area, familiar with local waters, the best
anchorages, marinas, and boat repair shops.
Safe Boating
Safe boating is the core USPS®
mission. USPS®,
it's Districts and Squadrons promote safety through continuing education,
fellowship with experienced boaters who know what they are doing, and safety
practices such as Vessel safety checks.
Best known for the
hundreds of public boating courses which local squadrons offer several times
each year to approximately 40,000 men, women, and youngsters, USPS®, America's
largest and oldest non-profit recreational boating organization, celebrated it's
90th Anniversary in 2004. Since it was founded at the Boston Yacht Club in 1912
and chartered as a national organization at the New York yacht club in 1914,
USPS®
has grown to include more than 60,000 members in some 450 squadrons in the
United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Japan. USPS®
also
assisted in the formation of the Canadian Sail & Power Squadrons which has
35,000 members. Boat ownership is not a requirement of membership and USPS
member vessels include sail, power, personal watercraft, kayaks, canoes, and
inflatable's.
To commemorate this milestone of service to the boating community,
a proclamation has been signed by all governors of the 50 United States.
Membership
Becoming a member of the United States Power Squadrons®
is quite simple. Locate a squadron near where you live, contact the chair of the
Membership Committee, and submit your application. The squadron’s Executive
Committee will review your application and decide if you meet the requirements
for membership.
What are the requirements?
- Since USPS is a volunteer organization, it is essential that our members
be willing and able to contribute their time, energy, and skills to the
objectives of the organization.
- One of the core beliefs of USPS membership is that an educated boater is
a safe boater. It should then come as no surprise that there is an
educational requirement. Typically, this has been satisfied by completion of
one of our public boating courses. However, recognizing that education can
be obtained from various sources, a number of additional courses have been
recognized as meeting this educational requirement. Most recently, the
membership has elected to allow squadrons to waive the educational
requirements for experienced boaters.
- Finally, you must be at least18 years of age.
