What is United States Power Squadrons®?
Organized in 1914, United States Power Squadrons® (USPS®), is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects. Our members are boating families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education and sharing fun activities with others in the organization. USPS has some 55,000 members across the country and in some U.S. territories. USPS is the world's largest non-profit boating organization.
Who should be interested in United States Power Squadrons?
Anyone who is a boat owner or anyone who sets foot aboard a boat. The term "boat" encompasses all types of vessels large and small whether motor or sail powered. The list includes jet skis, canoes, row boats, sail boats, cruisers and all types of recreational watercraft. We offer a basic boating course to the public which is free of charge. Anyone, age 18 or over, who passes the boating course examination approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administration (NASBLA) and who is recommended by an active member may join this fast growing fraternity of boaters.
Who Are We?
District 27 is one of 33 Districts which make up the United States Power Squadrons which is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Each District covers a geographical area of the United States and areas outside of the continental United States. District 27 was established in 1963 and is comprised of
20 Squadrons located throughout North Carolina and a small portion of South Carolina. You may navigate to each Squadron website by clicking on its burgee at the top of this page. Squadrons vary in size from 30 members to 200 members. Total District membership numbers is approximately1800.
Squadron Members Teach the Public and Each Other about Boating Safety
All of D27's squadrons have active boating education programs, teaching basic boating courses to the pubic and more advanced subjects to members. USPS and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary have teamed up to produce a public boating safety course, America's Boating Course®, which is taught in a classroom setting, is available on CD for self-study and can be taken on-line. A myriad of courses are offered to members which include seamanship, piloting, navigation, sail, radio electronics, engine maintenance and just about everything pertaining to boating and boating safety.
Squadron Members Perform Vessel Safety Checks For Recreational Boaters
The Vessel Safety Check is the same as the one conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. It assures that marine safety equipment is present, is within prescribed functional limits, and is compliant with Federal, State and Local regulations. It includes the examination of life preservers, checking of navigational lights, cleanliness of engine compartments, fire extinguishers, bells, horns, anchors, mooring lines, radio equipment, etc. Each squadron in District 27 offers free Vessel Safety Checks to the public. What is the District Function?
Like its parent organization, District 27 promotes "Safe Boating Through Education". District 27 Officers and Committees act as a liaison between the National Organization and the Squadrons within the District. Meetings, seminars and informal gatherings are held at periodic intervals during the year to present reports and educational programs pertaining to boating safety, cruising, charting, educational courses, civic activities and other matters of interest to members. The District is a resource of information and training for its Squadrons.
Responsibilities of District 27
To promote the publicizing of information regarding Boating Classes which are given to the public free of charge.
To coordinate efforts to make the public aware of the United States Power Squadrons and its status as America's Premier Educational Boating Association.
To promote the charting of waters in cooperation with government agencies. This is an operation which saves the Government millions of dollars in taxes each year.
To disseminate information and encourage the participation of members in the dozens of boating education and safety classes available.
Provide information and training for Squadron officers.
To encourage all Squadron members to actively participate in USPS functions, to provide initiative and new ideas in the interest of "safe boating".
