Boating Class Schedule for D9

The Power Squadron offers three courses to the public. The most comprehensive of the three is the Public Boating Course. This course is about 7 weeks long. Boat Smart is a 5-week course that is similar to the Public Boating Course, but does not include piloting material. Jet Smart is geared for the personal watercraft owner. Each Squadron holds at least one class per year and most hold more than one. Courses typically are taught in the Spring (usually in FEB or MARCH), in the Summer (usually July or August), or in the Fall (usually SEPT or OCT).

The list of cities where classes are taught is shown below. The list is arranged by state and then by city. The list is updated regularly but may be incomplete. If your city is not listed, call the squadron for the city nearest you. Class information can also be obtained by calling the boating class hotlines. For United States Power Squadron ® courses call 1-888-FOR-USPS. In Canada, for the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons ® (Escadrilles canadiennes de plaisance) courses call 1-888-CPS-BOAT.

Michigan's "Personal Watercraft Safety Act"

The State of Michigan has enacted a bill regulating the use of personal watercraft. It was passed on June 9, 1998 and is known as HB 5426, the "personal watercraft safety act". It restricts the use of a PWC to individuals at least 14 years of age and requires anyone under the age of 20 to obtain a boating safety certificate. You can obtain more information, including a copy of the House Bill, by visiting http://www.michiganlegislature.org and clicking on the Find a Bill / Resolution link. From there, select "House Bill" from the "Search For:" menu and enter 5426 in the "Number(s) / Letter(s):" box. On the "House Bill 5426" page, select the "House Enrolled Bill" version to examine.

Those of you who are not "net surfers" can call your state representative and have him or her send you a hard copy.
