The Duluth Sail & Power Squadron Public Classes


CLASS SCHEDULES


Date: Jan 6 to Mar 3, 2009
Time:  6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  ( Eight Sessions, includes one review/makeup night*)
Location:  Central High School Duluth
*Classes do not meet on Duluth Public School 'snow days' or school holidays.
Pre-registration is required.
Please arrive 30 minutes early on the first session to make payment and receive materials

      Text and plotting tools cost $55, which is paid on the first night of the class to instructor. Each additional family member is charged $5 material fee. There is no additional cost for the class. Students must be 16 years old or older to attend. Instructor volunteers are provided by the Duluth Sail and Power Squadron. Class limited to 90 students in 3 classrooms


Unavailable on Tuesday evenings in the winter?
The following 2-Saturday compressed schedule requires significant home-study between classes to be successful.
This is the same course content  compressed into two 6 hour Saturday sessions.

     The Squadron Boating Course is one of our courses designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating and qualify for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft.  Subjects include:

  • Boat handling under normal conditions
  • Adverse conditions and emergencies
  • Types of boats and boating terminology
  • Required and recommended equipment
  • Boating regulations and navigation rules
  • Lines and knots
  • Charts and aids to navigation
  • Piloting techniques (in Boating only)
  • Marine radiotelephone usage
  • Trailer boating
  • And much, much more

    These are instructor taught classes offering an opportunity for feedback and comraderie.

       Upon successful completion of the Boating Course, the student will be invited to join the Duluth Sail and  Power Squadron. Member benefits include access to Education Department elective and member classes including Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Weather, Engine Maintenance, GPS and others. Other Squadron activities include safety demonstrations, use of the Squadron dock and many social activities.
