USPS® Boat Smart Summary

Boat Smart is a course for all boaters (the personal watercraft operator; the hunter or fisherman operating an outboard utility boat; the skipper of a family cruiser; the sailing enthusiast). All boaters must follow the same nautical rules, regulations, and courtesies of the sea. All are subject to the same forces of nature while boating.

As boating is often a family activity, the course is of value to all members of a boating family. USPS encourages families to attend as groups.  Have your children attend the Kids Safety Boating Class held in conjunction with the adult course.  Qualified, enthusiastic, and experienced USPS instructors provide instruction as a civic service. There is never a charge for instruction; the only costs are those for materials, plus overhead costs such as classroom rental, shipping and handling, sales tax, etc.

While the content of this student manual serves as the basis for this course, it will also serve as a reference book in basic boating long after the course work is completed. The course meets the educational standards of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and features a proctored examination as required by many states and insurance companies.   Additional requirements of Washington State are covered as well and 10 additional questions specific to Washington State are included in the exam.  Successful completion of a course also entitles the student to membership in any Squadron within the USPS.

Boat Smart does not include an introduction to piloting and course plotting, like that which is included in the Basic Boating Class. These basics are helpful for coastal and inland waters and could prove beneficial in adverse weather conditions. Students are encouraged to use Boat Smart as a safe boating introduction and continue their learning. A broader base of knowledge can be gained through completion of additional courses which are available to all who choose to become members of a Squadron of the USPS.

America's Boating Course is also available for home study on CD-ROM, study manual, and interactive study on www.americasboatingcourse.com America's Boating Course is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.  Cost is $34.95 plus $5.50 for shipping.
