Coast Guard brochures listing the applicable Federal requirements are generally available at larger marine stores, or directly from the Coast Guard. Similar brochures are available from the Michigan DNR regarding State laws.
NOTE: Continuing in 2007 The Coast Guard will be paying more attention to the display of MC numbers. State & Federal law requires 3 inch BLOCK letters and numbers in a color which contrasts to the hull. Script, Shadowed or Italic letters & numbers, or those which do not contrast with the hull, do not meet the requirement and may be ticketed.
Also, the State of Michigan has not yet repealed the rule which requires a 26' to 39.4' boat to carry a fog bell. The state acknowledges that the rule is in conflict with the federal law and is working to fix the situation, but until they do the Coast Guard and other law enforcement may issue tickets. Get a Bell! It's a lot cheaper and easier than getting a ticket.
A concise description of the Federal requirements is available at the USPS National Web Site in the VSC Section. Click the link to see it in Adobe PDF format. Federal VSC Equipment
