Jones Beach Power Squadron Burgee

About the Jones Beach Power Squadron

Jones Beach Power Squadron Burgee

Conceived in the fall of 1953, the Jones Beach Power Squadron with forty-four charter members was born January 20, 1954. At a meeting held that date, under the direction of Commander William Nacovsky of South Shore Power Squadron and with the concurrence of District Commander Henry Cramer, a motion was made, seconded and unanimously carried to organize the new Squadron -to be known as JONES BEACH POWER SQUADRON.

The first Bridge was: Commander John R. Holub, N; Lt. Commander Joseph A. Cafaro, JN; 1st/Lt. Chester Williams, AP; Secretary George W. Schramm, AP; Treasurer Lee M. Kuemper, AP.

The first Piloting class was held in the Spring of 1954 resulting in 17 new members after successful completion of their examination. Concurrently with this first class, some 23 of our qualified pilots -and 2 wives undertook the study of Seamanship under the guidance of Commander Holub. In June a family cruise was held at Tobay Heading; some 36 boats, 70% of the fleet, turned out. In July, the Squadron Piloting contest was held in Oakdale. This was a big day for Meetings Chairman George Brand and his boat, "Miss Vicki", when they took first place with an error of 14 seconds and Commander Holub took second on board the "Roberta". Then in August, the Inter-Squadron Piloting Contest, sponsored by Patchogue Bay Power Squadron, was held in Great South Bay off the Patchogue River. Six squadrons participated. Jones Beach had twelve boats at the rendezvous, and eight entered. While we didn't place in the first three positions, Joe Cafaro's "Tootsie" was first in our Squadron. In December five sample pennants were proposed for the squadron, and the membership selected the design which was recommended to USPS for adoption.

The progress of Jones Beach Power Squadron from its infancy to date is a tribute to the dedicated devotion of its officers and members who have served their squadron so faithfully.
