Lackawanna's newsletter, the Totem, won an award for Excellence in Journalism for 1999. The February issue of the Ensign carries the list all the squadron's whose newsletter won such an award. Special thanks go to P/C Herbert F. McCaffrey, N, Lt Audrey McCaffrey, P, Donna Arndt (graphic layout), Lt Martin Arndt, JN, 1/Lt Carlton Riker, P (photos), and many others who helped out. 1/Lt Carlton B. Riker Jr., P received his award for becoming a life member with 25 merit marks. P/C Herbert F. McCaffrey, N and P/C Bill J. Robinson, N received awards from D/4 for successfully completing all the classes for Full Certificate and with 5 or more merit marks, also Master Mariner. Both completed in December of 1999. Speaking of Full Certificates, Lackawanna received that Prince Henry Award for having the most students successfully passed JN and N. Starting in 1997, D/1st/Lt Bill J. Robinson, N taught the JN class that resulted in 5 members with JN certification. 1/Lt Walter H. Meissner, N, taught classes that resulted in 6 members with N certification. This resulted in 83% of JN and 50% of N that passed in District 4 as coming from Lackawanna. There are a total of 18 squadrons in D/4. The Prince Henry Award is an alabaster statue on a mahogany base with brass inscriptions for each of the years since 1964 commemorating the squadron(s) that received the award each of those years. The last and only previous time Lackawanna received this award was in 1982. The statue will be later returned and be awarded to the squadron that qualifies next year. This award is a tribute not only to the members passing JN and N and to those that taught them, but also to all the proctors and instructors for the teaching the Public Boating Course and Member Courses that led to JN and to the Bridge and officers for organizing the educational programs given by Lackawanna. Congratulations! Prince Henry Award TAKE A LOOK - Sighting of the Magic Moment, Ocean Navigator American Yacht Review 1999.
