Cooperative Charting

On The Water and In The Air

Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron has been actively involved with Cooperative Charting since 2000 when it first adopted Nautical Chart No. 13276, which covers the local waters of Beverly, Salem, and Marblehead Harbors. Members of Marblehead and Beverly squadrons have been sending additions and corrections of this chart to the National Ocean Service (NOS). In July 2003, the 20th Edition of 13276 was published. Marblehead received a very welcome recognition.

MSPS has expanded its contribution to Cooperative Charting by

• Supplying aerial photographs of several harbors between Marblehead and Portsmouth, NH, which were included in the most recent US  Coast Pilot 1, 34th Edition.
• Adopting portions of the Chart No. 13274, which covers  Portsmouth Harbor to Boston Harbor (November 2004)

Locally, Tim Halvorsen created a partial Coast Guard Light List database, which team members have been updating with GPS Latitude/Longitude positions, depth soundings and photographs of each and every navigational aid on the chart.  Visit www.halvorsenonline.com/aids to see our navaid database.

About the Program. Cooperative Charting is a community service program provided by USPS in cooperation with the National Ocean Service of NOAA. The Program is conducted and administered cooperatively by the National USPS Cooperative Charting Committee and the Marine Chart Division of the National Ocean Service.

The Program is a major community service program.  Under it, USPS members supply information to the Marine Chart Division leading to the production "of accurate, up-to-date nautical and aeronautical charts" and related publications; and the preservation of geodetic control stations in the National Geodetic Reference System.
