Yacht club website

Beverly Sail and Power Squadron will be hosting the District 18 Fall Conference at the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly.

The speaker will be Harold Burnham of Essex Boatbuilding, which has just recently launched the schooner Ardelle, now berthed in Gloucester and taking passengers for hire.  Mr. Burnham also built the schooner “Fame”, which takes passengers for hire out of Salem.  Hal will give us a presentation on the building and launching of  the Pinky Schooner Ardelle.  Mr. Burnham also built the schooner Thomas E. Lannon, which takes passengers for hire out of Gloucester.

Harold Burnham comes from a long line of Essex shipbuilders and is truly one of a vanishing breed.  This is a rare opportunity for those who love the beautiful Essex schooners and their history to meet with a man who is carrying on an old tradition.

Click here to view the full conference flyer. Click here to view the bio for our conference's National USPS representative, R/C Gregory Korstad, AP; who is the National Law Officer.

Be sure to go online and register NOW (see flyer for details) or send a check to Jack Reed (see below). Also, call some of your USPS buddies and encourage them to join you at the Conference!

Support USPS, and have a great day with boating friends, hear about Harold Burnham's new schooner, listen to the presentation of the Chief Commander's message and ask R/C Korstad some questions. All this and food, too! The fee is only $15 per person, plus a small processing fee if you register online (under $2.00)

Holiday Party
Friday, December 4 , 2009 @ 6:30 PM
Gerry 5, 210 Beacon St., Marblehead
Club website  •  Directions

The Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron invites members and their guests to our annual Holiday Party at the Gerry 5 on Friday, December 4 at 1830. Dinner choices are baked stuffed chicken or steak tips with appetizers, salad bar and dessert. The price is a very reasonable $22/person.

The speaker will be Mr. Bruce Bateman. He will give his excellent presentation on “The Lore of Shipwreck Legends”. Mr. Bateman grew up swimming in Danversport and was “underwater all the time.” He has been a Banner Tow Pilot, a Glider Tow Pilot, an Ultra light Aircraft Examiner and a test pilot of experimental aircraft. He was co-founder and president of the Plattsburgh Air Force Diving Club and co-founder of the Air Force Diving Team, where he set up procedures for jumping out of helicopters and rescuing downed airmen. He dove under the ice for body and aircraft recovery and trained police and firemen for rescue teams.

Mr. Bateman started lecturing on history while he was in the Air Force in 1957 on Lake Champlain. He was also a member of the U.S. Air Force Bobsled Team, which brought yet another new adventure to his life.

Fall Social Meeting
Thursday, October 8, 2009 @ 7:00 PM
Marblehead Yacht Club, 4 Cliff St., Marblehead
Yacht club website  •  Directions

Please plan to join us at the Marblehead Yacht Club for our next social meeting. Cocktail half-hour will be followed by an Italian dinner catered by Santoro’s in Peabody (and served by your officers). Following will be a talk by Capt Bob Blair.

Captain Blair is one of the harbor pilots in Gloucester and Salem. We heard him speak several years ago and he is held our attention for an hour with his stories of suggesting speed and courses to the captains commercial ships going into Salem and Gloucester. I especially liked the story about the freighter approaching the pier in Gloucester at 10 knots without enough air pressure to put the engine into reverse! And the liquid outcome!

So we can get a count for food, as always, please RSVP by email to Louis Schoenthal, AP or by phone at 978-745-9746 and leave a message.

We hope to see many members there.

Annual Meeting / Change Of Watch
Sunday, February 8 , 2009 @ 11:00 AM
Marblehead Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA

2008 Annual Meeting

It’s hard to believe that the squadron year is almost over and it’s time for the annual Change of Watch on Sunday, February 8 at 1100 at Marblehead Yacht Club. This is also our mandatory annual business meeting and a quarum is required to conduct the election.

Please plan on attending to vote for the members of the new bridge and wish them well for the 2009 season. You might even like the people you will be voting for more than you liked the ones you voted for last November. We promise to keep the “business” to a minimum.

The menu consists of bagels, cream cheese, Danish, sweet buns, juice and coffee.

Our speaker will be Garrett Wohl. An avid sailor, she moved her 38 foot sailboat "almost single-handed” from Salem to Grenada in 2007. Your AO followed the trip by email and she has quite a story.

Garrett is a Boston architect and principal in the firm of Wohl-Baker. Beside the normal ICW and sailing issues, she had to balance the trip with her business commitments, flying back to Boston regularly to keep the business going. You will be intriqued.

Southbound to the Bahamas: A Cruising Odyssey
Sunday, January 25, 2009 @ 2:00 PM
Abbot Public Library, 235 Pleasant Street, Marblehead, MA

Schannings Sailboat during their 8-month cruise

Ever daydream about extending your boating season by heading south in the fall? Take a break from winter, and come to Abbot Library to hear about Brian and Sue Schanning’s voyage south on the Intercoastal Waterway and east across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas last fall and winter.

MSPS is pleased to sponsor this presentation with the Marblehead Yacht Club. Brian and Sue have put together a colorful slide show illustrating both the excitement and the challenges of an eightmonth voyage covering Chesapeake Bay, port cities in South Carolina and Georgia and the much-anticipated crossing from Florida to the Bahama Islands. It won’t be all clear blue waters, white sand and fried conch – In addition to lessons learned during the cruise, they will also share tips on planning, boat preparation and leaving their Marblehead home for two thirds of a year.

This is a great opportunity to virtually enjoy a “dream trip” with experienced cruisers, and in the process pick up practical lessons and tips that could benefit any of us greatly on any extended cruise. Pencil in 1/25/09 now on your new calendars to save the date!

Carribean Charters Discussion
November 13 , 2008 @ 7:00 PM
Marblehead Yacht Club, Marblehead
(see on map & get directions)

Thinking of doing a Caribbean or other yacht charter? Do you have experiences to share about a past charter, good or bad? Are you thinking about doing it again?  Then please plan on attending our fall social meeting.

The evening will begin with refreshments and a meal  provided by the squadron. The brief formal presentation by your Administrative Officer (AO) and members of the Marblehead and Beverly squadrons will actually be more of a list of items for group discussion.

I’m sure members have many more experiences to share with the group then the discussion leaders do, so please bring your pictures and memories with you. If you would like to have some pictures included in the presentation you can email them to the Administrative Officer with a cover email.

Also in attendance will be Angela Connery of Angela Connery Yacht charters. Angela is based in Salem and arranges yacht charters all over the world. Please check out her web site at http://www.acyachtcharters.com/aboutus.shtml. She will provide insights into chartering.

Don’t have an interest in chartering? Then just come to enjoy a good meal,  refreshments, and the opportunity to socialize with other Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron members and guests.  There will also be the usual door prizes. And the whole event is being hosted by the Squadron in recognition of your loyal membership!

Very important: Please respond promptly to the invitation card you will be receiving by mail very soon so that we can prepare well for this interesting event!

Photos courtesy salemferry.com.

This month’s “meeting” is on the water.

You’ve always wanted to try the Salem Ferry? Haven’t you? But you’ve had no compelling reason to do so?

Here is your opportunity! The season is nearly over.

Enjoy a comfortable 45-minute ride on the ferry’s high-speed catamaran from Blaney Street, next to the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, to the Aquarium in downtown Boston. Free parking is available in the Ferry’s lot in Salem. Click here for directions to the Salem Ferry. Click here for the Salem Ferry web site.

No activities are planned but three hours in town provides enough time to dine (Legal Seafood has been suggested) or hanging out at a watering hole of your choice chatting and eating hors d’oeuvres with friends. Of course, the ferry landing is only a short walk to Faneuil Hall and the North End.

Reservations are unnecessary. Arrive at 5:45 p.m. for the 6:10 p.m. ferry to Boston and be at the dock at 9:45 for the 10.00 p.m. return trip home.
