Education and activities for boaters in Marin County, California.

The Squadron

Marin Sail and Power Squadron is a Unit of United States Power Squadrons® serving Marin County, California, since 1959.  USPS® was founded in 1914 and is the largest nonprofit fraternal sail and power boating organization in the world.   Marin Squadron is part of USPS District 25, which includes squadrons in the San Francisco and Sacramento regions of California.

Serving Our Community

Marin Squadron offers frequent Boat Smart® public boating classes and numerous member classes throughout the year.  Our members help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, through the CO-OP Charting Program to keep nautical charts up to date, they cooperate with the US Coast Guard and American Red Cross for Safe Boating Week, and with the US Coast Guard for Vessel Safety Checks (click "Safety Check" for information).  USPS has been honored by three U.S. Presidents for civic contributions and for educating more than 4 million boaters in the last half-century.

Boating Classes

Marin County borders the busy San Francisco Bay and the stormy Pacific Ocean.  Smart boaters are educated and alert to a wide range of conditions, hazards, and regulations.  Click icon for video.

Boat Smart® boating classes are taught to the public by the Marin Sail and Power Squadron Education Department at the Robert M. Kell Educational Center in Novato, California, and at other Marin County locations.  Classes for USPS members are available throughout the year, covering seamanship to marine electronics.  Home study classes and educational videos are also available.

Since 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge connects Marin County to San Francisco, and forms a line between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

  A Message From Our Commander

Welcome to the Marin Sail and Power Squadron web site. If you have an interest in boating or are a boating enthusiast, you also have an interest in safety on the water. The United States Power Squadron mission is “Safe Boating through Education”. Supporting this mission, the Marin Squadron is committed to boating education and safety.

One of the most satisfying and lasting activities is learning new tasks and becoming knowledgeable at something we enjoy. If, at the same time, one contributes to the welfare of fellowmen, the accomplishment is even more significant. Treat yourself to the education and to the new friends that safe boating can bring.

The Marin Squadron offers Boat Smart and America’s Boating courses to the general public. These courses are held at our Robert M. Kell Education Center located in Town Center at Hamilton Field, Novato. They may also be held at other selected locations around Marin County.

More in-depth courses are offered to our membership covering the subjects of Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Navigation, Celestial Navigation, Seamanship, Weather, Sailing, Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, and Marine Electronics.

While you are taking courses, enjoy the other membership activities of “America’s Boating Club”. Enjoy our dinners, cruises and community service events. Join us and help make the marine environment safer!
