Education and activities for boaters in Marin County, California             Join Us

The Squadron

Marin Sail and Power Squadron is a Unit of United States Power Squadrons® (USPS®) serving Marin County, California, since 1959.  The parent organization was founded in 1914 and is the largest nonprofit sail and power boating safety educational organization in the world. We teach classes in seamanship, navigation, and related subjects to provide our membership with on-going educational opportunities. Our members enjoy on-the-water activities together such as cruises, rendezvous, charting and fishing. In addition, activities ashore include meetings and marine programs, parties, dinner-dances, picnics, and field trips. The "Members & Activities" page describes the many other benefits of membership. We are honored to be one of 450 squadrons in the nation, and one of 9 squadrons in northern California. Marin Squadron is located in USPS® District 25 which covers the San Francisco Bay area, Delta, and surrounding area. (Click for map, use back button to return here)

Serving Our Community

Marin Squadron offers frequent public boating classes and numerous member classes throughout the year.  Our members help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, through the CO-OP Charting Program to keep nautical charts up to date, they cooperate with the US Coast Guard and American Red Cross for Safe Boating Week, and with the US Coast Guard for Vessel Safety Checks (click "Vessel Safety Check" for information).  USPS® has been honored by three U.S. Presidents for its civic contributions and for educating more than 4 million boaters in the last half-century.

Boating Classes

Marin County borders the busy San Francisco Bay and the stormy Pacific Ocean. Here's an example of the accidents that can happen.  Click icon for video.  (Use back button to return here.)

To avoid trouble, smart boaters are educated and alert to a wide range of conditions, hazards, and regulations. Taking classes to improve and sharpen boating skills will make your time on the water safer and more enjoyable.

America's Boating Course classes are taught to the public by the Marin Sail and Power Squadron Education Department at the Robert M. Kell Educational Center (see map) in Novato, California, and at other Marin County locations.  Classes for USPS® members are available throughout the year, covering a wide variety of subjects from seamanship and navigation to marine electronics.  Home study classes and educational videos are also available.

Since 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge connects Marin County to San Francisco, and forms a line between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

A Message From Our Commander

Welcome to the Marin Sail and Power Squadron web site! We are one of eight local United States Power Squadron units operating in Northern California, and one of over 400 in the Unites States; not to mention our sister organization the Canadian Power Squadron and additional units overseas. We are located in the Hamilton Town center at 789 N. Hamilton Drive, Novato at our Robert M. Kell Educational Center.

Our primary mission is boating education. Whether you are someone just interested in boating or an accomplished sailor or power boater, you know that we never stop learning. If you are looking for a safe boating course because you are contemplating buying a boat or need the course to get a discount on your premium from your boat insurance carrier, we are here for you.

The primary point that makes us different from other boating organizations such as yacht clubs is our concentration on boating education. In fact almost all our members belong to a yacht club. Yes we too have cruises and social events. And we have interesting speakers at our bimonthly dinner meetings. However education is what makes us unique. We offer a wide range of classes from seamanship, piloting, navigation, cruise planning to foreign countries, to celestial navigation and the use of the latest computer based navigation programs. These are just a few of our more than 25 classes and seminars covering a wide range of maritime courses.

Come and join us!

Fair winds and shimmering seas,
Mark Gathings, Commander
