USPS Educational Courses


The most important objective of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) is "to establish a high standard of skill in the handling and navigation of yachts and to encourage the study of the science of navigation". To further this objective, the USPS has organized an excellent education program, and our Squadron is proud to carry it out.

The Boat Smart Course is offered to the public and is open to everyone. It is an introductory course for all boaters.

In addition to The Boat Smart Course, the USPS offers well-rounded education courses for the small boat operator consisting of Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Weather, Engine Maintenance and Sail. With this background, operation in coastal waters will be safe, proficient and enjoyable for Captain and crew. For those equipped with electronic gear, Marine Electronics is highly recommended. Cruise Planning will provide a better understanding of the necessity for thoughtful and complete planning before embarking on any cruise, short or long. the Junior Navigator and Navigator courses deal entirely with Celestial Navigation and blue water piloting and are of most value to the deep water sailor. However, many coastal water sailors with inquiring minds regard them as challenges. Instructor Qualification is of great help to all actively engaged in teaching or proctoring.
