The Manhasset Bay Power Squadron (MBPS) was established in 1941 and is a member of
District Three of the
United States Power Squadrons® Sail and Power Boating. Our history is rich with achievements and honors,
both civic and educational. The squadron has
supplied numerous leaders who have served with distinction at the District and

Squadron Highlights
- Chartered 23 September 1941,fathered by the Bayside Squadron.
- Everett Frooks was the first Commander.
- The burgee has, as its most distinguishing feature, the four Cardinal
Points of the compass and the Squadron publication, Cardinal Points
, takes its name and masthead from the burgee.
- Elimentary Piloting classes were first given in Manhasset and were
expanded to Port Washington soon after.
- In 1949, at the request of the Roslyn school administration, public
classes were begun and continue there to this day.
- Classes were added at Glen Cove in 1951; Oyster Bay, 1958; North Shore,
1959; and Syosset in 1967.
- All advanced and elective courses are taught at St. Mary's High School,
Manhasset, Long Island.
- Oyster Bay Power Squadron established itself in 1971.
- MBPS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1991 during the tenure of its
first woman commander, PC Joan Pappas, AP, who is the editor of our
award winning Cardinal Points.
- In March 1995, Great Neck Power Squadron voted to merge with the MBPS.
- There are currently 170 members in our squadron.
