boating is fun .... we'll show you how

The Memphis Sail and Power Squadron is a non-profit organization dedicated to safe boating education and promoting high standards of navigation and seamanship.

The squadron is a unit of District 17 of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS)®. Districts tie a geographical group of Squadrons together (see map) and provide administrative oversight. USPS is the national organization that overviews and provides services to the Districts and Squadrons.

This squadron covers the Memphis TN area including Western Arkansas, Northern Mississippi, and Western Tennessee and has over 60 members, divided between power boaters and sailors. Several times a year we conduct boating safety classes for the general public. Throughout the year, we teach advanced and elective courses for our members. A member can progress from basic boating knowledge to advanced navigation through the comprehensive courses offered. Members can also take courses in marine electronics, sail, engine maintenance, cruise planning, weather, and many other specialty interests.

We also do courtesy Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) for any boat owners in the area, and we assist NOAA by verifying nautical charts through a program called Cooperative Charting.

Boating Safety

SAFE BOATING does not just happen.  If you are on the waterways, it is important to have basic boating knowledge, like "rules of the road".  These rules will define who is expected to do what under any given situation during normal operation of their boat, or in a emergency situation. You can learn all this, and more,  by taking the classes offered by the Memphis Power Squadron.

Membership

Upon completion of our Safe Boating Course, or if you already have extended boating experience, consider joining the Memphis Sail and Power Squadron and continuing your boating education by taking our advanced classes.  USPS Triangle You would become a member of Americans Boating Club® and become part of a strictly volunteer, non-profit organization, that has an objective of Self Education, being a Fraternal Boating Club, and performing Civic Services.  If you are a member of the United States Power Squadrons who has moved into this area and want to transfer to the Memphis Sail and Power Squadron, please contact the Squadron Secretary.

You can save money, too!  Many insurance companies offer discounts to boat owners who have successfully completed this course.  And there are other benefits!

Here are some ADVANTAGES of a USPS Membership
