If you like boating, water sports, cruises,
picnics, new friends, social gatherings,
or learning about nautical information, you've come to the right place. Let me tell you a little about us.
At the turn of the century, gasoline powered boats were beginning to gain popularity over sail and steam powered vessels. Roger Upton, a member of the Boston Yacht Club, had purchased a gasoline powered boat, and in 1911 suggested a club within the club for a select group of so called "gasoliers". The following year, during the Boston Yacht Club's annual cruise, a number of power boats were invited to join the windjammers. During the cruise a severe nor'easter blew up and dismasted and capsized many of the sailboats. Mr Upton's command of the powerboats went to the task of towing disabled sailboats to safety. No losses were reported and the rescues were made well known and publicized. At the annual meeting in 1913, the club within a club was upgraded to the name of Power Squadron, and on February 4, 1914, the national organization as we know it today, the United States Power Squadrons, was officially formed at the New York Yacht Club. The organization has since grown to over 450 squadrons with both men and women members interestd in both power and sail boating.
More than 50 years ago, five members from the Harbor Brook Yacht Club decided to start the Meriden Power Squadron. On February 2, 1954 the charter was signed with a grand total of 13 members. Today we have over 85 members from Meriden, Southington, Cheshire, Wallingford, Bristol and many other towns.
Dedicated to the advancement of Boating education, safety and the camaraderie of recreational boating our members meet 1 to 2 times a month (except July and August) for general and/or executive meetings in Meriden to plan and discuss upcoming events, educational classes and enjoy various progams that are held. Our events are usually held in the Connecticut River at places like Pattaconck Yacht Club and Hamburg Cove, and cruises that can be to Block Island, Montauk, Greenport and other places as well. Educational classes are usually held in Meriden or Southington. MPS is a fun organization of members with the same interests and concerns about our waterways.
