Welcome Aboard!

Nansemond River.       The Nansemond River Power Squadron (NRPS) is based in the beautiful scenic city of Suffolk, Virginia. The Nansemond River provides access to the Hampton Roads waterways, the lower Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.

As a civic service, the NRPS conducts boating safety classes to the public where you can learn about boat handling & seamanship, needed equipment, rules of the road, lines & knots, charts & aids to navigation, engine troubleshooting, boat trailering, and much more. Advanced courses are offered to our members that include piloting, electronic & celestial navigation, weather, sailing, cruise planning, engine maintenance, and marine electronics to name a few.

As another civic service, the NRPS offers free vessel safety checks to the public to maximize your safety and minimize your chance of being fined by authorities for piloting an unsafe vessel. Members help to keep nautical charts accurate by supplying information to the Marine Chart Division of NOS/NOAA leading to corrections to nautical charts, small craft charts, and Coast Pilot publications. NRPS members also supply data on depth surveys, range status, geodetic marks, and aeronautical charts.

The NRPS maintains a full calendar of social events for the pleasure of its members. These events include cruises, rendezvous, family outings, boating races, and contests. Other benefits that members enjoy include:

Members can enroll in a great variety of advanced grades and elective courses which are only available to United States Power Squadron (USPS) members.

Members will join with other knowledgeable boaters in our area who are familiar with the local waters, the best anchorages, marinas, and boat repair shops.

Members are automatically invited to join in the squadron and district cruises, rendezvous, predicted log contests, raftings, and other on-water activities.

Members can qualify for significant marine insurance discounts provided to those who complete advanced boating courses.

Members have access to names and telephone numbers of Port Captains for distant rivers, lakes, and coastal oceans who know the territory.

Members receive THE ENSIGN, the official USPS magazine.

We would be delighted to have you visit one of our general monthly meetings so that you may learn more about what membership in the NRPS has to offer. You can become eligible for membership whether you have a power boat, a sailboat, or no boat at all. Send email to Commander Donnie Weaver, AP at fintonic@verizon.net to find out when and where our next meeting will be held. The sooner you join, the sooner you'll begin to reap the great benefits!
