Safe Boating Through Education

basic boating course:

Basic Boating Course Schedule

The Squadron Boating Course is a traditional civic service of the United States Power Squadrons organization.  Since 1914 local squadrons have presented the course to anyone who wished to attend - to date more than 3 million people.  Learning to boat safely is important and the increased knowledge will enhance your safety on the water and your enjoyment of the sport.

Do you qualify to operate a personal watercraft? In order to obtain the state boating safety certificate, you must take a boating safety course (a minimum of 8 hours) and successfully pass the required written exam.  By signing up for the USPS boating course offered by NNJSPS, you will meet the state requirements.

  • Operators of personal watercraft (PWCs or Jet Ski's) must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Persons born on or before Dec 31, 1978 must have a state boating safety certificate in their possession when operating a personal watercraft.
  • Operators on non-tidal waters must have a New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) boating license in addition to a state boating safety certificate.
  • Jet Ski operators caught without a certificate will be subject to fines ranging from $100 to $500.

I have a power boat. Do I need a boat safety certificate? Yes, if you are operating any power vessel and you were born in 1959 or later, you are also required to possess a boat safety certificate. On June 1, 2008, all power vessel operators born in 1949 and later will be required to possess a certificate. As of June 1, 2009, all power vessel operators, regardless of date of birth, will be required to possess a boat safety certificate. Remember, any sailboat with an engine is considered a power boat.

Complete details are available at the New Jersey State Police Marine Services website.
