Oak Ridge Power Squadron Calendar

Here is our upcoming lineup of courses and one-day seminars for 2008:

First Monday monthly: State boating test, 615PM at ORPS building
The Tennessee State Boating Test will be offered monthly, and will USUALLY be the first Monday of every month at 615PM-730PM at our building at 707 Emory Valley Rd, unless otherwise indicated. You must bring a black pen, your SSN and the Type 600 license to the test. Please arrive a few minutes early.

  • All persons born on or after 1/1/1989 are required to pass this test to operate a motorized watercraft in Tennessee. To take the test you must first pre-Register at Wal Mart by getting the information/registration packet at the fishing/hunting counter. The packet is $10.
  • Those who successfully pass the test will receive a certificate, which must be available to present to a TWRA or Coast Guard official if your boat or jet ski is stopped. If you were born after 1/1/89 and can't show the certificate if your watercraft is stopped by TWRA, you will be fined. We have received a report from someone whose 15 year old got fined $180 for getting stopped on a jet ski and not having the certificate.
  • Folks born before 1989 may take the test for free at the normal test time if they would like to test their boating knowledge (you don't register at Wal Mart). You will not receive a certificate, but you might learn something, and we're always happy to see folks interested in safe boating!

July 26 (Saturday seminar): On-Board weather forecasting

  • When: Saturday July 26, 9:30 to 11:30am
  • Where: 506 Lovell Rd, Knoxville, TN (BOAT SUPERCENTER - Northeast corner I-40/Lovell Rd)
  • Cost: $25 per attendee for course materials
  • Seating is limited, please sign up in advance by contacting Jack O'Hearn
  • While not a course in weather, this seminar explains how just using your own senses can help you determine what conditions you will encounter where you are. By all means, a forecast is important. It will tell you what weather systems are headed your way, but they are challenged to tell exactly where and when conditions will change. Add your own observations and you have an extra edge. Add a couple of instruments and you can verify your observations. The seminar explains weather systems, how to understand clouds and their changes, using changing wind direction, temperature, and pressure to hone in on emerging weather fronts. The seminar includes the McGraw-Hill Onboard Weather Forecasting waterproof Captain's Quick Guide to take aboard your boat.
