The CNN website is (June 06) running an article on the growing popularity of houseboat rentals.

It seems these floating cabins are becoming increasingly popular getaways, with broad appeal to couples, groups, and families: Which is absolutely great.

What is worrisome is that these large, heavy, and complex vessels are, perhaps, being operated by people with little or no knowledge or training. The article concluded with the correspondent asking the rental firm representative how they can turn folks loose with the boats if they have little or no experience. The answer; "A quick and thorough training program" (military intelligence?).

It ends with a quote from the rental operator: "As far as the controls go, its very simple. Steering the wheel like a car right and left; forward and reverse with this thing. It is not complicated at all."

New boaters are a positive thing, a very positive thing if they enjoy it enough to learn about it and make it one of their regular activities. But, you might keep a special watch for big boxy boats, and if there seems to be some anxiety at the helm and between the crew be prepared, AS YOU ALWAYS ARE, to lend a friendly, helping hand. You might be able to keep several boating trips from becoming less than pleasurable, and, add to the number of trained, safe boaters.
