COMMANDER'S MESSAGE, May 2008:
Commander’s Message – May 1st Annual OKCSPS Dry River Run We started off the spring OKCSPS River Run Friday night at the Apple Gate Park with great "tube steaks" (hot dogs) cooked to perfection (easy to do when you do it yourself!) with all of the "fixins" to include Patsy's excellent chilli, beans, and chocolate cake for dessert! Gathered around Dana and Laurie's campfire were: Dana Tischer,. Laurie Hestand, John and Wanda Morgan, Francine Konen, Bill and Patsy Caldwell, Mark Anglin, Danny and Marilyn Goss, and guests and former members, Sharn and Wanda Harrigan. After dinner, we discussed the river's condition and listened to the hoot owls serenade us as we enjoyed the dazzling clear bright, beautiful star filled skies. We went to sleep remembering the forecast for the perfect river day. Sometime during the night, the wind howling in the treetops stirred us! As we woke, well so much for the forecast. The winds seemed to be about 20 with huge whitecaps, overcast and about 44° . So, we thought we'd worry about the river after breakfast on Bill and Patsy Caldwell's palatial houseboat "Alibi". During the 2 ˝ hour breakfast fit for kings (eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy), we discussed the winds, whitecaps, and river flow. The river flow was about 160,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), where John informed us that 50,000 to 60,000 cfs was normal. Considering the excess flow, white caps, cold temperatures, and underwater hazards, we decided to make this a dry river run. Enjoying the breakfast was: Dana Tischer,. Laurie Hestand, John and Wanda Morgan, Francine Konen, Bill and Patsy Caldwell, Mark Anglin, Danny and Marilyn Goss. That is a roomy houseboat! There may be a picture of the river flow just downstream below the dam on our website. Saturday, Dana and Laurie accomplished some vessel safety checks in lieu of the river run. We scouted around and admired some restored boats including a 42' wooden Trojan headed for the Great Circle in a few weeks. There were plenty of good campsites available and very few bugs, especially the biting kind, hot showers and a friendly camp host. Your tireless Commander in an effort to ensure all facets of the park were satisfactory, I accomplished a 2 hour eyelid check with no problems. Then it was time to enjoy a good filling meal at Shad's Catfish Hole (cash only there.) After dinner, we moved to the campsite and enjoyed Dana's campfire as the wind finally did die down . Enjoying the dinner and campfire were: Pet and Linda Zurhorst, Dana Tischer,. Laurie Hestand, John and Wanda Morgan, Francine Konen, Bill and Patsy Caldwell, Danny and Marilyn Goss, and guests, Sharn and Wanda Harrigan, We did miss the social guidance of "More Power" Ron and Mary, and the company of Peggy Anglin. Well, maybe next year! The weather Sunday was perfect and what we were promised by the forecasts for Saturday.
