May, 2008:
Words from the Commander With all the ice and snow that we have been experiencing lately (as I write this column) boating and boating activities may not be at the forefront of your thoughts. That's understandable, but certain plans are being formulated or underway for the coming season. Beginning in January there are several district activities that will require the involvement of the membership. Included are the Tulsa Boat show, scheduled for January 22 to February 3, 2008. This boat show includes a booth at which the district will be marketing our five squadrons. Flyers are being produced to hand out to visitors. We have received some door prize gifts to give away at the show and will do that in conjunction with a boating safety quiz to be given to the visitors. Those who pass will be eligible for the drawing, while those not doing so well will be given information about upcoming BoatSmart and Boating classes. Now's the time to start attracting new members. There is a sign up sheet for workers on the district web site. On February 2, 2008 beginning at 1030 (10:30am) will be the Winter Council meeting for D31. The meeting will be held at the Forest Ridge Country Club Broken Arrow, OK. A call to the meeting is included in the Daymark. The call to the meeting will also be posted on the district web site. It includes directions to the country club, which will be a wonderful venue for this meeting. The main purpose of this meeting will be to map out a plan for helping the squadrons reverse our membership decline. Some ideas have been submitted as part of the agenda for this meeting. A complete agenda will be submitted to all council members by January 12, 2008. The squadron commanders will have this information for any member interested in what will be discussed. Actions from this meeting will determine the content of the Spring D31 Council/Conference meeting in Tulsa on March 14 -15, 2008 Squadron commanders are advised that the OD-1 form, listing all the officers and committee members is due to USPS by February 1, 2008. Failure to get this in by that time will result in erroneous information being published in the annual directory of officers for USPS. For those squadrons with change of watches after that date, it should be submitted with your best guess on the makeup of at least the bridge before that date. I am not aware of any hotly contested bridge elections this year within the district. So get those forms filed. They can be completed on the DB2000 program. Also on the calendar for the first quarter of 2008 is the Annual Meeting of USPS in Dallas. This will be your best opportunity to attend a national meeting, if distance is any deterrent. This will be a special meeting in that a new Chief Commander will be given the oath of office. If you think you have a formal COW at the squadron level you need to see how it is done at the top. The new Chief will be Creighton Maynard from the Fort Worth squadron in D21. More information is available on the D31 website at www.usps.org/lc/d31. I Look forward to meeting the members of Oklahoma City Sail and Power Squadron at their COW on January 12, 2008. D/C William A. Miller, P Commander D31: ***************************************************************************************
