2008 Change of Watch
Union Hills Country Club
9860 Lindgren Ave, Sun City, AZ
February 9, 2008

The annual rite of passage each year is the Change of Watch (COW), where we thank the outgoing bridge and committees for their great efforts through the year and welcome the 2008 squadron bridge and committee members. As commander's have said in year's past, don't worry about the pomp and circumstance; we know how to have fun.

Johnson signs on for another term—Cdr Bill Johnson, AP, has agreed to serve a second term as commander of the Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron. He becomes the second person in the squadron’s almost 50-year history to do so, joining Jim Hill as a “two-timer.” The squadron has elected a new ExO and AO, who were also installed at the February Change of Watch by D/C Chuck Peterson, SN.

Barb Lusson honored—P/C Ron Werner reads the proclamation honoring Barb Lusson with the Thunderbird Award, the squadron’s highest honor for those who provide the highest level of service to the squadron. For many years Barb has pitched in to get whatever job needed to be done for the squadron.

Oh, sure. It’s easy to smile now—P/C Doug Frazier is all smiles as he is presented with the first “John Yount Sheer Genius Award” for the biggest screw-up of the year while boating. Good taste dictates that your editor recommend you hear the story first hand rather than through tempting embellishments in this publication.

Educator of the year—Rob Anderson, right, is congratulated by Cdr Bill Johnson and D/C Chuck Peterson on being named educator of the year for the Phoenix Squadron.

Newest 25-year member—Jerry Anderson, P, is congratulated by Cdr Bill Johnson on achieving the milestone of 25 years of membership in USPS.

Thanks for all you do—Members of the Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron received a big THANK YOU for work performed doing Vessel Safety Checks during the past year. Included are P/C Ron Werner, Cdr Bill Johnson, Terry Gray, Jean Gray, Rose Werner, Jackie Wanta and John Lusson.

Change of Watch revelers—Among those enjoying the festivities from Prescott were members Ed and BJ Wojcik.

Been there; done that—Jim Hill, with Marge, was the first squadron member to serve two terms as commander.

Slaking a thirst—Grace Schoonover (from left) Sam Whitehead and Kathy Anderson, stop for the camera

Wizard and wife—Wizard-first-class (by dint of an earlier certification) R/C Bob Schloeman and Norene, paused for this photo at the change of watch.

Four of the finest—Four past commanders of the Phoenix squadron ingest the day’s minimum requirement of vitamin C at the Change of Watch. (from left) Paul Schoonover, Tim Harrington, John Lusson and Jim Hill.
