Past Commanders' BBQ
and
General Membership Meeting
By P/C David Allocco, SN

Preparing to Barbecue—An esteemed bunch of Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron members assembled at the home of Grace and Paul Schoonover to lay plans for the 2010 edition of the Past Commanders’ Barbecue. They are all past commanders, from left. Bill Johnson, Paul Schoonover, Fred Drawert, Bob Schloeman, Tim Harrington, Lee Whitehead, Connie Johnson, Joel Lieberman, Ron Werner, Les Ormsby, David Allocco and John Yount.

Everyone is invited to the Annual Past Commanders BBQ to be held on 20 March at Lake Pleasant. We have reserved the Spring Canyon at the Pleasant Harbor Marina for Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20. The BBQ will be Saturday with social time about 3:00 PM, dinner at 4:00 and a general membership meeting to follow. Feel free to arrive as early as you want because some folks will be there from Friday through Sunday.

Spring Canyon has two ramadas, electricity, water, and a large fire pit. It has a gentle slope to the water so you can launch a small boat, canoe or kayak. There is room for a number of RV’s, boats on trailers, and tents. You can come on Friday and stay until Sunday if you want. Please bring a chair.

Spring Canyon is next to the Pleasant Harbor North Ramp so you can spend part of the weekend boating on Lake Pleasant.
Your hosts for this event will be the squadron’s past commanders. They have planned an excellent BBQ. They plan to provide beef brisket, chicken, potato salad, beans, coleslaw, garlic bread, lemonade, various other salads, deserts, pie and ice cream!
After the formal activities, the evening will be quite informal and will include a campfire.

The cost to enter Pleasant Harbor is $6.00 per car. The cost of the BBQ is $8.00. As always, children are free. Here are the directions to Spring Canyon:

From Phoenix, take SR 74 (Carefree Highway) west to Pleasant Harbor Blvd. The entrance to Pleasant Harbor Blvd. is about 10 miles east of I-17. This is on the east side of Lake Pleasant. (Do not drive all the way to the Maricopa County Regional Park). Go north approximately 2 miles on Pleasant Harbor Blvd. and turn left (west) to enter Pleasant Harbor. After you pass the entrance gate, turn right and follow the signs to the North Ramp. Spring Canyon is immediately to the right (east) of the North Ramp. It’s a paved driveway down to the Ramadas.

Arizona Game and Fish Outdoor Expo
27-28 March 2010
By Ron McNeil

The Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron will be one of the many exhibitors at this year’s Game and Fish Expo. This event is an excellent opportunity for the squadron to publicize our existence, recruit new members and to promote safe boating. This is a very large event, which in 2009 hosted 150 vendors and exhibitors and drew over 35,000 visitors.

To help draw a crowd to our booth, we are planning to exhibit two boats (a sailboat and a powerboat).

Another great way to draw a crowd is to have a busy booth. In other words, if people walk by and sense some excitement in the crowd, they will want to find out what’s so interesting. This is where we need you. We are trying to get a good number of members to visit the expo, have fun checking out the exhibits and most importantly stop by our booth.

If you want to get more involved helping with the set up, take down or working the booth, please send an email to Ron McNeil at ronaldwmcneil@yahoo.com

You can also get more information about the expo by visiting the following web site.
http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/showcase.shtml

The weather should be great, admission and parking is free and there will be plenty to see, eat and do, so we hope you plan to attend.
This event will be held at Ben Avery Shooting Facility, 4044 W. Black Canyon Blvd., Phoenix Saturday March 27th from 9-5 and Sunday March 28th from 9-4.
